Ponting quits as Tassie captain
AUSTRALIA captain Ricky Ponting has announced he will hand over the leadership of Tasmania to vice-captain Daniel Marsh.
Marsh captained Tasmania to the Pura Cup final last summer while Ponting was in West Indies for the World Cup.
Ponting will play under Marsh's leadership for the first time for the Tigers in Sunday's Ford Ranger Cup one-day game against NSW at North Sydney Oval.
Ponting, who yesterday led Australia to a 2-0 series sweep over Sri Lanka in Hobart, said leading Tasmania had been a great honour but it was the right time for Marsh to captain the team on a permanent basis.
The move is largely a formality as Ponting plays little interstate cricket due to his commitments with the national team.
Ponting admitted that, because he rarely gets to play for Tasmania, he had struggled with day-to-day knowledge of opponents and their tactics in the domestic competitions.
"We want to make sure that Tasmanian cricket continues to flourish under talented leadership,'' Ponting said.
"Continuity of leadership is central to the the success of any team and I've been working with the leadership group at the TCA (Tasmanian Cricket Association) for some time to plan for the ongoing success of the Tigers.
"I'm delighted for Dan and that is a view shared by the entire playing group.''
