Seymour is hardly the face of RL. Didn't star in the NRL's expensive advertising campaign
So only greg inglis and brett stewart can be punished for behaviour that heaps scorn on the code?

wasn't at a club function when he got pasted.
And the code of conduct that stewart was suspended under clearly states whether or not a player is at a club/nrl function they should act in a sober, professional manner ect.
Nor did he do a media report just hours before getting sh!t faced, saying players should be careful, they are being watched more than ever.
Irrelevant. It makes stewart look like a bigger idiot and is ironic but how should this affect how a player is punished? Nobody had heard of that interview until after he was punished.

Don't go on with all this crap about bringing the game down.

That is exactly why stewart was stood down according to gallop and the nrl. If friend and seymour are both not stood down it is a disgusting case of hypocricy by the nrl. True the incidents were not as bad as what allegedly happened with stewart but he was not suspended for that. I will be happy enough for any nrl suspension, even if not as sever as stewarts, but if they get off scott free by the nrl it is massive double standards.

LOL that's an understatement. He's got a head like a beaten favourite.

Disgraceful double standards. The NRL set the benchmark with Stewart, they need to follow through with this. Who gives a crap if this twat isn't the "face" or Rugby league, he still hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons, and needs to be punished. It makes a total mockery of all the things Gallop said on last Thursday's footy show.

Why should he be punished? Was he at a team function? If not, he did absolutely nothing wrong. He drank a bit too much and pissed his pants and slept in a garden. It is not his fault the media is going overboard with this dribble.

Now Friend should be punished way more than $10,000. Anyway who drinks and drives is a disgrace. And speaking of light punishments, Watmough should have been punished way more severe than what Manly gave him.

We can talk double standards when comparing Stewart to Friend. My opinion, any player who drinks and drives should be suspended for at least 10 weeks .. AT LEAST!

some of you people are hillarious.

stewart - got smashed at a club function, went home and crash tackled a girl where witnesses say he assualted her = 4 weeks suspension and depending on court case, could face some time.

watmough - got smashed at a club function where he punched a sponsor in the head after insulting his daughter = $10,000 fine

friend - gets smashed at a club function and then gets done for high range drink driving = $10,000 fine (i believe he should have copped a suspension for this one)

brett symour - gets smashed with a few mates the day after a game, gets so wasted, that he stumbles into a flowerbed and then walks home = be very unlikely to cop a $10,000 fine.

It might not be pretty but a blokes do piss themselves on occasions if they are caught short, and sleeping in a garden bed is not the smartest or most comfortable of places but again who has he affected but himself, or the gardener I suppose.
Seymour has been showing some promise with the Sharks, this is an unfortunate lapse, I do not believe any action is warranted.

Club can discipline him if they see fit- but this is nowhere near the category of Stewart or Friend

Any player dumb enough to get caught in PUBLIC, drunk and disorderly, especially to the point of passing out, SHOULD be hauled over the coals. Is it so much to bloody ask they don't write themselves off to the point of oblivion and media scrutiny. THAT is bringing the game into disrepute and that needs to be punished.

I'm sick of this "Oh so what, someone had a bit too much to drink" bullsh*t. There is a culture of binge drinking in this sport that needs to be stamped out once and for all.

There is a culture of binge drinking in society itself. Sure what Seymour did was stupid, but if all he did do was piss his pants and fall asleep in garden then what harm and embarrasment but to himself has he done. We don't want the NRL to over-police the players actions. That would be way worse than what Seymour has done and lead to players getting suspended for having a sip of alcohol or worse.

But Friend should be suspended for 10 weeks at least. His actions were not only against the law but could have killed innocent people. Watmough should have been suspended for at least 5 weeks. Hitting someone is just not on.

Seriously...is it too hard to think "gee, the game has had a few scandals in the last week. Perhaps tonight I'll have a nice meal and watch some DVD's".

Really? Is it too hard to behave?

I agree with you Thomas, HOWEVER, the people suggesting this problem is systemic in Rugby League as if RL deserves special treatment on the issue need a reality check.

The problem is consistent with the male population between the ages of 18 (probably even less) and up to about 29-30.

And if the government thinks the alcopop tax is going to fix it, they're f**king delusional.

Seymour reported on a 'bender'

http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/sport/nrl/story/0,26799,25203849-5006066,00.html

SHARKS halfback Brett Seymour is the latest NRL star to fall off the wagon after he finished a 10-hour bender in a garden bed early Monday morning.

Sources have told The Daily Telegraph that Seymour was drunk and out of control in Cronulla on Sunday night, throwing pizza and abusing patrons before being ejected from popular nightspot 2230 Lounge Bar shortly after midnight.

Contrary to reports that Seymour urinated himself, The Daily Telegraph understands that a drink was spilled on him by another patron. He was asked to leave shortly afterwards, and stumbled into a garden bed at the front of the venue.

An onlooker helped Seymour to his feet, before he walked away alone. Ten hours earlier, the former Bronco was one of about eight Sharks players to joined coach Ricky Stuart for a casual drink following Cronulla's win the previous night at the Caringbah Inn.

Witnesses at Caringbah said the group was well behaved to begin with, betting on the races while watching the Rabbitohs-Roosters clash on tv. It is understood that Stuart and most of the players went home before 6pm, leaving Seymour and two other players to continue drinking.

One witness said the halfback was loud and boisterous before sundown. It is believed the players then headed onto a series of bars in Cronulla Mall to continue drinking.

Winger Misi Taulapapa, props Jacob Selmes and Kane Snowden, and hooker Terence Seu Seu were seen with Seymour as the night wore on. There are no suggestions that any of the other players behaved inappropriately.

One onlooker in Cronulla said Seymour was knocking back bourbon and cokes later in the night.
"He was pretty gone, talking rubbish to other people and chucking pizza,'' the witness, who did not wish to be identified, said. "The thing that amazed me was that they kept serving him drinks.''

Seymour finished his bender at 2230 Lounge about 12.30am Monday morning, when the venue manager escorted him from the premises for being overly drunk. It was then he fell into the garden bed, where it was last night reported that photographs were taken by onlookers.

The Daily Telegraph understands that Seymour reported for training at 9am the same morning and completed the session. Cronulla CEO Tony Zappia last night said the club was first made aware of Seymour's conduct when a member of the public phoned reception on Monday afternoon.

Zappia spoke to Seymour briefly on the phone last night and they will meet today for more detailed discussions about his behaviour. He confirmed there has been no contact from police.

"I'm just going through the process of collecting as much information as I can and seeing what footage is available from CCTV,'' Zappia added. "I understand there are cameras in the mall that might show us exactly what happened outside the nightclub. We won't be making any calls or deciding any thing until we know exactly what occurred.''

Seymour had been sacked by Brisbane in late 2006 for inappropriate behaviour after allegations he head-butted a woman on the dance floor of Brisbane's Regatta Hotel.

If all he has done is gotten drunk then imo this is a massive over reaction by the club.

If the NRL is so concerned with its image and alcohol related incidents perhaps they should put their money where their mouth is and say no to all the alcohol advertising and sponsorships they live off.

Yes it is a society-wide problem but what NRL players need to do is:

1: Realise that they are public figures
2: Realise that there have been a few incidents in the last week which means as soon as one of them steps out of line, people will point it out and the media will jump over it (regardless of the fact it is a common occurance in blokes their age).
3: Perhaps curtail their drinking for a couple of weeks until it dies down.

They are either very dumb or just don't care.

Unfortunately being a first grade rugby league player means you are also a fairly high profile public person. Footballers are celebrities. If you, as a player, don't like it...well bad luck. Pull your f**king head in and behave yourself.

You want to get on the booze and get blind drunk? Then have a BBQ and invite some mates around and get boozed if you have to. It seems that some guys don't understand the concept of keeping a low profile.

true but the general male 18+ population are not being paid very very well to be public figures and role models.

Like it or not a higher standard of behaviour is expected as an NRL player. If players don't like it then p*ss off and become brickies or plumbers where they can drink themselves into a stupour as often as they like!
