Cronulla investigates Brett Seymour's alleged nightspot incident
March 18, 2009
Cronulla have stood down half-back Brett Seymour from all commitments with the NRL club while they investigate an alleged alcoholic bender last Sunday evening.
Seymour is under investigation following a drinking session that started last Sunday afternoon with club coach Ricky Stuart and teammates at a local pub.
While Stuart and several others went home early, Seymour reportedly partied on until his night ended after midnight with the half-back ejected from 2230 Lounge Bar.
Newspaper sources gave conflicting reports about his behaviour with some saying he'd thrown pizza and abused patrons while others insisted he would be cleared of wrongdoing.
It's not the first time Seymour has been accused of alcohol-related indiscretions. He was sacked by the Brisbane Broncos in late 2006 for an incident at the Regatta Hotel.
Sharks chief executive Tony Zappia said the club would fully investigate the latest claims and were attempting to access CCTV footage.
With current events in mind, it would be an understatement to say we are disappointed Brett has put himself in this position," said Zappia in a statement.
"He is obviously slow on the uptake, showing a lack of responsibility to himself, his teammates and to the club.
Seymour's incident came less than a week after the NRL stood down Manly's Brett Stewart for four weeks for his public drunkenness at the Sea Eagles' season launch.
Sydney Roosters hooker Jake Friend is another to misbehave after he was caught drink driving at three times the legal limit after a club booze session last Monday night.
He has been fined $10,000 by the club and ordered to undergo education and counselling.

true but the general male 18+ population are not being paid very very well to be public figures and role models.

Like it or not a higher standard of behaviour is expected as an NRL player. If players don't like it then p*ss off and become brickies or plumbers where they can drink themselves into a stupour as often as they like!

naturtal human behaviour doesnt stop because you become a public figure. Some of these guys are basically kids , you cant expect them to behave at a higher standard just becuase they are footy players.

All you can do is put the proper programs are processes in place to educate these guys and hope it works.

Sometimes they are going to stuff up. Most however are going to follow the rules.

Seymour stood down by Sharks

doesnt anyone find the above a touch contradictory....particularly the part in bold? it appears as though both incidents began as unofficial club drinking sessions.

it's all well and good for us to blast the guys who are getting into trouble, but its obvious the clubs.......not just the players......arent getting the message. include the manly debacle with all this, clubs are putting their players in a position to get into trouble. i know, i know, these guys are supposed to be adults who should know they're being watched and should behave accordingly, but its their own clubs who are encouraging this behaviour.

culture. that's what it comes down too. it's australian football culture......it doesnt matter what level it is, there always has to be an excuse to get onto the piss.

yes, all these guys had the following day off.....the football week is generally cycled: 1 - gameday; 2 - recovery day (leading into pissup arvo/night); 3 - day off; 4 - return to training; etc. but are they doing themselves, their teammates, the club, the fans, the game any good by righting off themselves after recovery each week just because its their saturday? it's prolly the 2nd most important day of their working week after gameday.....to get their body right for the following week.....maintenance for the long year ahead. we hear of olympians abstaining from alcohol, or curbing their intake for months prior to competition.....i personally know world-class triathletes who are disciplined to do everything right in-season in order to give themselves and their bodies the best chance to compete at their best.....and then they let-loose in their off-season. aren't our footballers also world-class athletes?

clubs, coaches and senior players need to rethink the temptations they expose to their assets. the game is at the stage now that it doesnt just affect their own performance.....but you'd think would be reason enough anyway......but the image of the entire sport.

I appluad the decision . Zappia is proving himself to be a legend and exactly what this game needs at a higher level imo.

Just because you started something with the coach doesn't mean you need to finish it by yourself 10 hours later, an embarassment to your club and your industry (the NRL).

Someone said above "naturtal human behaviour doesnt stop because you become a public figure. Some of these guys are basically kids , you cant expect them to behave at a higher standard just becuase they are footy players."

Instead, I'd say that they can't expect to be very well-paid professional footballers unless they behave at a higher standard...

Being an NRL player is a privilege, and playing every weekend is not a right that cannot be taken away by your employer or industry if you breach their conduct rules.

Didn't Boonie drink a heap of cans on the flight over to England, as did Rodney Marsh. They were considered legends also.
