You can take the boy out of Ireland, but you can't take Ireland out of the boy...

That's all well and good for us to say "oh he's just one of the boys/lads" or to cheer him on, but it's the very reason this great game has so many problems. Grown men can't handle the dichotomy between rights and responsibilities.

Go have a drink, be part of the team, by all means go for it. But if it encroaches on your responsibility to be an icon to young kids then you've failed. Regardless of what these footballers think they are, they are role models to a lot of kids.

It seems clear that the footballers and the fans have learned nothing from the past month (Gower), 12 months (Knights last season), 2-3 years (Bulldogs) all the way back to the start of the game. It's pretty poor work... I hope the NRL just keeps bumping up the penalties even if it means driving players from the game.

Any kid with half a brain would know this was wrong.

Kids idolise players for their footballing abilities, not for what they do on a Saturday night.

Yes but when "what they do on a Saturday night" end up in the headlines it gets back to the kids.

No but rumour has it he wants out at the Gold Coast. Very keen to stay here after Saturday night's reception for him. He was blown away by it.

Please make this true!

See , Nothin at all.

Brian Carney

Monday, March 13, 2006 - Newcastle Knights

The Newcastle Knights have investigated an alleged incident involving one of its players, Brian Carney at a Manly Hotel at around 8pm last night.

It’s believed Brian was asked to leave a licensed premise and attempted to re-enter, believing his wallet was still inside.

In doing so, Brian was restrained by security staff and police were called.

Police informed Mr Carney that re-entering licensed premises after being asked to leave is a breach of licensing laws and issued a $550 on the spot fine.

Brian Carney and the Newcastle Knights wish to make clear;

* There have been no suggestions by police that any assault took place.
* Brian unreservedly apologised to the security staff and police at the time and called the hotel today to express his regret the incident took place.
* The club has been informed by police that in their view the infringement notice was sufficient punishment under the circumstances.

Having investigated the incident, Knights CEO, Ken Conway said today,

“I agree with police and in this instance regard the fine and the embarrassment Brian has suffered as sufficient punishment.”

If that is all that happened i am disgraced by the media. Reading the headlines all i see is 'THE NRL has been hit by another alcohol-fuelled incident after Newcastle wing Brian Carney was ejected from a Manly bar last night', making it sound like a big issue.

Not much in it, but still silly.

Don't these footballers have mates to look after them when they are p!ssed? I really hope that if I got booted out of a pub and tried to get back in, one of my mates would say "Matty, you're acting like a dickhead. Go home bfore someone flattens you".

I know they would, and I know I have done it for mates of mine in the past. I'm not blaming his mates - it's no-one's fault but his own - I'm just looking at it from a practical point of view.

I stand by my original statement. If Carney is found to have broken the law or brought the game into disrepute by his actions then the club should take appropriate action. It seems like that is the end of it -- it sounds like a reasonable punishment... perhaps even a bit harsh.

Footballers do need to get their heads into gear though. To suggest that kids show any discrimination between footballing skill and the lifestyle is to ignore the nature of children. Kids pick up the little things more than you would think -- kids can and will say things out of the blue, especially in relation to issues that you weren't even aware they knew anything about.

Every time a footballer steps out of their house they are representing their club and the code.

And as such they should always conduct themselves in a proffessional way, as kids do take notice of their hero's in the paper and it does create an impression.

1st round of the NRL and his already embarrassed himself and had the cops called him, if I was the club I'd automatically fine him $5000 and next offense kick him out on his arse regardless of he is. - That goes from anyplayer, 1st grade to SG Ball.

Didnt we learn anything from Bathurst? Hopefully when Smith comes he can address the pisshead culture that seems to be embedded into the club.

People comparing themselves to footballers and how society judges them is ridiculous, they are public figures and role models. We are not.

Thank christ you're not running the club, there'd be no players left. I mean, he was just trying to have a few drinks, have a bit of fun. The situation got out of hand when security man-handled him for trying to re-enter to get his wallet. This is a non event. If you're talking about players who continually break the law, and continually set a bad example, then look at Sonny Bill. How many times is it now he's been caught drink-driving? He's out there putting peoples lives at risk when he gets behind the wheel.
