OK, so we got DESTROYED on Saturday. But you know the mark of a truly good team? Getting back on top after being essentially down and out. It is how they handle the criticism from fans and the media after that huge defeat that counts. For example, in the first cricket Test in Sri Lanka, the Aussies were bowled out for 220. But they came back and showed thir class to win it by 197 runs. Now THAT is a great team. And I'd like to believe they share similarities with our BELOVED EELS.
You want an example of passion from a newsih fan?
How about this:
Ever since 2000 (when we got back to Sydney and I got interested in League and Parra) I have watched EVERY single game. Be it live or be it on the TV, I will ALWAYS watch them play (if it were up to me and my Macca's salary, I'd go to every match; reality dictated I just can't afford it).
We have copped some huge beatings. But you know what? You know what I wore today and yesterday to Uni? My BLUE 2004 Eels jersey (BTW, is that Home or Away? I'm not sure, 'cos on Sat we played with the Gold, and technically it was an away game).
I then went to North Parramatta Macca's (where I work with quite a few Doggies fans) and told EVERY single Dog supporter after insulting me and my team to bite me.
I drive my blue car with yellow plates. "It looks gay," my mates say. I say I don't care - it's Blue and Gold.
I was there round 26 2003 when we nearly won. I copped a lot of crap. But I am proud of the fact wqe have won 4 Premierships. I am proud of my club's past.
Last year there was a show I went to watch in the middle of Bankstown. I wore my Parra jersey. I copped crap, but I said - bite me.
Bottom line: I may not be the longest Eels fan.
But I can certainly say this - I am (in my mind) one of the BIGGEST Eels fans you'll ever meet. I own just about EVERY piece of memorabilia related to the Blue and Gold. That is all I ever want for my Birthday and Chrissie.
I'll admit I have been highly critical of Saturday's performance, but as the dust settle I can clearly see it is merely round 1 and we an do better.
I don't care whether you love Smith or loathe him. I don't care whether you love a certain player or would like him to leave. You know one of the best things about the Eels? The fanbase - we are like a giant family.
And I think we owe it to the guys to support them like a family.
I don't know about some of you, but I will match the match on TV and cheer my damned guts out Sunday. I'd go if I could afford it.
GO THE MIGHTY BLUE AND GOLD EELS!!!
