I think they know the chances of CQ getting a team are zero so no harm in promising the world when you are confident you will never have to deliver on it.

Byes?
Thats great. So we will have 2 clubs being carried TV deal-wise every week. As I said, there is diminishing returns in terms of TV rights value as the comp grows larger.

I wonder how the networks would feel about not even reaching some markets each week? Or the clubs, having to split the revenue from 20 teams across 22.

Each expansion licence is a valuable and limited comodity.

You are overly optimistic about player depth too.

I don't see what the problem is with having a bye. Realistically there are only 5 feasible days - Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday. I don't see us running on more than 4. That means there's 5 prime time post news slots -

Friday Night
Saturday Night early
Saturday Night late
Sunday Night
Monday Night

Then you ad:

Saturday afternoon news lead in
Sunday afternoon early
Sunday afternoon news lead in

Those are the most valuable slots. Any other game would be used to focus to markets:

Friday night
Saturday night or Sunday afternoon news lead in

Those are 10 slots I refer to. Anything after that tends to cannibalise existing audiences. Adding extra Sunday Night or Monday night games will affect crowds.

Exactly. So we effectively have 10 games generating revenue from 20 teams, and we have 2 teams sitting on their hands.

They're not exactly doing nothing.

When those teams get aired they're targetting their markets... :?

You could have them play an 11th game if you want but as I said, you'd just be eating into your own audiences. I'd rather see teams rested under that scenario.

How is Thursday night any different to Monday night?

Well there's usually more entertainment/social options available on a Thursday compared to Monday.

For part of their season, the NFL runs a Thursday, Sunday & Monday round schedule - but it would become quite exhausting over 24+ weeks.

Bombers bid due shortly

Leaders behind a bid to launch a second NRL club in Brisbane say they are within days of finalising a proposal.

If successful, the Brisbane Bombers could enter the NRL in as soon as 2013 although it remains unclear when expansion of the competition will be sanctioned.

Under the bid the Bombers would share Suncorp Stadium with the Brisbane Broncos as a home venue, which bid leaders say will give fans a chance to watch live matches each week.

However the Bombers would be based out of a redeveloped Albion Park, currently a Greyhound track.

Bid leaders are confident there is demand for a second team in the city as well as the financial support and have promised $1million annually for youth development.

“Naturally there are a number of key factors we can cover within our Bid Documentation at this stage, including a community engagement program, corporate and sponsorship strategy along with the grassroots development of Rugby League, but the Independent Commission maybe looking for something particular that we will need to tweak, which is why we’ve had a sliding business plan since day one,” said bid delegate Craig Davison.

The NRL's long-awaited independent commission, a body to run the sport made of club representatives which is due to be launched shortly, are likely to consider rival bids from Perth, Ipswich, NSW Central Coast, Central Queensland, Papua New Guinea and Wellington.

It is expected to be funded by cash from an increased TV rights deal due to be negotiated in the coming months.

Bombers poised for announcement

THE Brisbane Bombers say they will be in a position to announce their coach, captain and several players the moment they are given the green light to be part of the NRL.

General manager of the Bombers Expansion Bid, Craig Davison, denies a decision has already been made on the head coaching position.

Davison was at pains to point out potential coaches and players had approached the club, through their managers, not the other way round.

He said the potential coaches came from the NRL, England and Queensland's Intrust Super Cup.

"We're very flexible," he said. "We have no one signed up and we have not given any guarantees."

Nevertheless, the Bombers issued a media alert yesterday claiming that Brisbane-bred NRL players would jump at the chance to play for the Bombers.

"We will announce our coach, captain and a number of squad members the moment we're given the green light - they are just as excited as we are," Bombers commercial manager Nick Livermore said.

Davison admitted "they" referred to players and coaches who entertained ideas about playing for the Bombers, and only Canberra Raiders Test forward David Shillington had made any concrete commitment to the new club. Shillington has a five-year deal with Canberra.

It includes a get-out clause should the Bombers get the green light from the new independent commission. The 2015 season shapes as the year for an increase in clubs from 16 to 18. The expansion bid teams - the Bombers, Western Corridor, Redcliffe and Central Queensland - are set to step up the propaganda war once the commission is in place.

Central Queensland last week issued a statement outlining the "compelling reasons" why they should get the nod.

Davison believes at least one other southeast Queensland bid team will surface soon.

The establishment of the commission has been put on hold following the postponement of today's Australian Rugby League annual meeting in Sydney.

The meeting was meant to officially bring down the curtain on the NRL Partnership between the ARL and News Ltd (publishers of The Courier-Mail) with the commission to take over immediately, but several legal issues relating to the handover have to be resolved first, with soem relating to existing sponsors.

ARL chief executive Geoff Carr said the national body, as well as the Queensland and NSW leagues, had signed off on all their legal responsibilities.

Good news. From what I understand the Ipswich bid is not far away from a similar sort of anouncement/launch.

PNG and Perth have recently launched their membership and merchandise campaigns.

It will be really up to the NRL to pick the bids in the locations they want at this rate. All look like meeting various minimum standards.

I think there is a reason this is all happening now, with the commission, TV rights about to be underway. Time for all the bids to crank up their campaigns.

I found this bit very very interesting

The expansion bid teams - the Bombers, Western Corridor, Redcliffe and Central Queensland - are set to step up the propaganda war once the commission is in place.

Central Queensland last week issued a statement outlining the "compelling reasons" why they should get the nod.

Davison believes at least one other southeast Queensland bid team will surface soon.

Redcliffe Dolphins are going it alone? They were heavily in the Bombers camp, but they have also made noises about going it alone or linking up with a Sunshine Coast based bid. Interesting that it may come to something.

Souths-Logan seem to just want to back a winner (supporting both ipswich and the bombers in the past).

And what of this "other" South East Queensland bid Davidson is aware of?

Is this the rumoured Easts Tigers bid or a Sunshine Coast bid?

The Queensland cup clubs are scrambling to align themselves with a bid. They all want to be backing the winner, but its not certain which it will be.

EDIT - no surprises its mostly the Qld Cup clubs not alligned with a Queensland NRL side since the NRL decided to kick other clubs out of Queensland. Something has to fill the void.

Wonder which players have approached the Bombers.

I could see Tate returning to Brisbane, Michaels will likely play most of next season in reserves for the Titans and I can see Beale moving if he's stuck behind Hoffman and being wasted on the wing at the Broncos.

All depends what year expansion occurs.

A number of player and coaches managers have also approached the WARL about signing for the Reds if they are succesful. I am sure there will be plenty of players touted out to the potential bids ready for some serious money to be thrown around in 2015 as the 2 new clubs look to build squads and sign a couple of marquee players.

Lol.

Still can't believe that these guys really think that name and logo is marketable. And the lame flight crew gimmick... gold

I admit I must be in a minority as I actually like the logo! I think it can be marketed really well, Biggles Bear mascot, cheerleaders in flight attendants outfits, what's not to like? :)

I am disappointed by the bid so far though, I had high hopes when I saw the pwerful people behind the bid but they seem to have totally missed the community engagement side of things so far. Maybe they are gearing up for a big push when the IC decides if there will be expansion, lets hope so.
