Brisbane3 - What is needed to make it a successful bid?

Ok I've been thinking about this one. I think it's possible that Ipswich Jets could go it alone without Easts Tigers or Newtown Jets.

Why do I think that? Time!!

As several people on this thread have pointed out, a Brisbane 3 club is unlikely to enter NRL until anywhere between 2035 up to 2050.

If this is the case it means that they have 10-25 years to improve the financial outlook the club and build a stronger case for them to operate on their own without a merger. If they have the resources to do this they should go down this path. Go it alone.

If Easts Tigers won the Brisbane 3 bid and extended out to western corridor. I'm not sure that it would capture the imagination of people in those areas, because of the association and history the Jets have in the area. One of the reasons the Dolphins are already successful is their branding and the local sentimentality that the club has.

So to summarise I've done a slight I turn in that I think Ipswich Jets can go it alone if they use the time wisely to build a stronger case. Thoughts?

I think not linking with easts is crazy given the money they have but it would need to be based in Ipswich not at langlands park which is inner Brisbane

Which easts would never agree too

If it’s not based out there the region won’t take to it and the broncos will complain like crazy

Pretty much. Jets can do at it alone but they still require assistance/resources to bring the infrastructure that they own up to scratch.

Outside of a last minute rushed merging of bids attempt to try leapfrog Dolphins. It’s not crazy at all. As explained ad nauseam there is 0 correlation between Ipswich/Jets & surrounding regions with Easts/Tigers. Tigers will go at it alone again like they did with this round and Jets will go at it with full QRL support now that Ikin and Canavan are leading the charge in QRL headquarters.

It isnt a popular opinion but I always put up the option of renaming the Titans to South Queensland Titans and gradually moving games to Suncorp. The GC is a fail. 4 game on the GC tops.
white elephants a perfectly good stadium for no reason plus gc needs a club doesn’t matter if successful or not they have one of the largest, if not largest junior catchments in qld as an area

gives gc up to suns on silver platter for no reason

Valid points.
I would 100% change the name though. South Queensland Titans is a better name. Try to get in on jnrs from Brisbane and Ipswich and Toowomba areas.

A clubs name has no influence on where they can source juniors from.

QLD doesn't have club "catchment" areas like Sydney either.

It would be a signal of a change of their identity and intent to spread out. The name Gold Coast has negative sporting connotations.

No, leave it as it is. That's a crazy idea. Just give them time and they'll be fine. Be patient, Gold Coast will prove to be an important area for RL in the coming years
Between 6,500 and 6,800 juniors, 15/16 competitive junior clubs and a couple of schools with elite rugby league programs I’d say Gold Coast already is important.

The issue of previous years for clubs located in Goldie is more to do with management and club identity. Too many incarnations of GC clubs tried to get by with over the hill players mixed with reserve graders instead of properly servicing the tremendous talent within their own backyard. Too many snake oil salesmen have come and gone as management. Too much unsureness of what a Gold Coast club is suppose to represent - is it a holiday town? A retirement village? A money grab opportunity?

In the early seasons Titans built a reasonably strong squad composed of experienced heads who still had it and workhorse/toilers and that got them a few good finishes. Everytime they have tried to flash their way through the comp since then it’s got them falling flat on their face.

Gold Coast can be both - a magnificent place to live but also a place you go to do the work and elevate yourself. I think the Titans now are slowly realising their potential with things that were once perceived as negatives, are actually positives.

Long way to go yet though.

Ipswich have location & branding. Tigers have the money. Dolphins had all three. Vlandys pushed for merger between tigers & jets but wasn't to be (dolphins still would've been too strong tho).

Two of their schools are the best in the country in whatever the commonwealth bank is called today

Titans have been run like a rabble except for the first few years under Cartwright and searle

Their crowds were touching 20k

It’s an area afl is desperate to break into. They’ve thrown the kitchen sink at the suns

Who knows maybe Ipswich next and if expansion really booms easts come in too down the track

With News Ltd divesting Foxtel selling the broncos makes a lot of sense. Dunno if easts can afford to pay the 100 million plus for them though

Easts buying broncos is something I suggested in 2023. Imagine 3 former brl clubs running teams in NRL?! Donkey would love it!!

The question you have to ask yourself, is that in 2025, how many RL fans are not catered for? And how much latent support is there currently?
