Think it is probably best to let Baptiste go, create some good will with him so if we ever want him to come back he won't feel like we ruined his chances by keeping him behind McCullough for another season.

Would also free up some cap space, which could be handy seeing as he doesnt get a run anyway.

This would be a big loss imo. We are already down on talent coming through and this guy has potential. Should have been the back up hooker over Hunt this year.

If you want to free up cap space then get rid of Lui, Anderson etc, guys with no potential.

I would like to see this given a shot

1 - Hoffman ( let's not forget how good he was up untill get got hammered by Ingliss and got several head knocks against the Titans, he is young let him bounce back )
2 - Copley
3 - Reed
4 - Hodges
5 - Yow Yeh
6 - Wallace
7 - Hunt
8 - Hannant
9 - McCullough
10 - McGuire
11 - Thaiday
12 - Glenn
13 - Parker

14 - Norman
15 - Gillett
16 - Hala
17 - J Wallace

We can get plenty of minutes out of every forward in the starting line up, our back 3 can all even play 80. I would shift Thaiday into the front row to partner Hala when Hannant and McGuire are rested. Norman can play a roaming role when he comes on and I like the workman like ethic J Wallace showed when he got a shot, he was very good. McCullough needs to learn to play 80 minutes.

I think we have the tools, we have the players, we don't need to go out and buy anyone.

Members’ Forum 2012

Topic 1: Game Day Scheduling and the NRL Broadcast Deal

1. With the new TV deal the Broncos should have extra money. What are you doing to buy a couple of key players?

Paul: It is not that simple. Not only are we getting an extra $400,000 but so is every other club in the league. This just means that the value of players has increased and a redistribution of funds will need to be made. Current contracts will be negotiated as some player’s contracts involve clauses where their salary increases when the salary cap increases. We won’t be going out and spending money just because we have it but instead look at reinvesting in areas such as membership and sponsorship.

Topic 2: Player Recruitment and Retention

2. What is the club’s policy in regards to player retention and recruitment? Can we expect any more signings for next year?

Anthony: Our policy for recruitment is, and has always been, that we recruit from within. We invest millions of dollars to train up these young Broncos and we want to utilise this talent. If we can’t find what we need from within, then we will start looking externally. There will be no major signings at this stage and we have chosen our top tier of 25 players. We are still looking to fill some of the 25 spots on the second tier.

3. Can you let members know which players are off contract each year? Could a list be put in the magazine?

Anthony: We feel that this is not our responsibility or our place to say. If the players want to voice this then they are welcome to. They sign these workplace agreements as an employee of this club and as the employers we have to respect their privacy. The media will let you know in advance and this will come from the player’s management not the Broncos’.

4. How are you going to replace Petero?

Anthony: We have known in advance that Petero was retiring which has given us time to prepare. We have players in our system already such as Josh Maguire and David Hala. They have not had much play time as Petero has taken that place on the field but we believe that they can fill that position in front row. Petero has been playing since 1998, represented Queensland 33 times and Australia 45 times. Obviously they have big shoes to fill and we don’t expect them to be as good as Petero just yet.

5. Will the Broncos go after Johnathan Thurston?

Anthony: This has been asked in the media a lot lately and no, we won’t. OK, let’s look at this honestly - as good as he is he is on the wrong side of 30. He has another year of his contract with the Cowboys and by that time he will be 32. We would have to purchase him at a premium. To put that in perspective, that would be about $1 million. What would we get for that? He was 23 when he started playing first grade. We have Corey Norman, 21, and Ben Hunt, 22, both playing first grade. When Johnathan started playing, no one batted an eyelid. Now we have two young players that we would have to sell to get Thurston so that he could play a couple of years for us before retiring. Then once we have spent upwards of $1 million, these two young guys are going to come back and beat us while playing for another team because we have sold them for Thurston before they reached their potential. We need to persist with these young guys. It is frustrating at times but the only way to learn is to get out there. Even Locky made mistakes when he was in his early 20’s, Wayne stuck with him and look how far he got.

Topic 3: On Field Performance

6. Why doesn't Andrew McCullough play the full 80 minutes?

Anthony: He is getting there. Has hasn’t got the capacity to stay out there and remain mentally and physically affective. At the moment he is averaging 60-65 minutes a game and by giving him that rest, it keeps him at his best. He is the second fastest player to ever reach 100 games and he is only 22 years old. By 24-25 we believe he will be able to play the full 80.

7. Are any statistics kept on dummy half runs and one out for all teams? If so, where do we sit on those statistics compared to other teams?

Anthony: Yes and we are coming third.
8. Are you happy with the leadership group this year after Darren Lockyer?
Anthony: We have a very tight group at the moment with great harmony. The boys are stepping up and becoming leaders to all the young players. It is hard to define leadership and these boys haven’t been in the position where they have needed to be leaders but they are certainly doing that now.

9. Do you think Sam has been a successful captain?

Anthony: Sam is a very hard worker and the club means everything to him. It is very hard to follow the captainship of Darren Lockyer who was a once in a lifetime captain but Sam is doing the best he can. He is a great ambassador for our club and we commend the work he does.

I can understand not going after Thurston. It would give us maybe 1/2 years at having a go at a premiership, and then after that we would be in the same problem we are now. But we should have the money to buy a Thurston type player.

The thing that concerns me most about the above is that Griffin compares Hunt and Norman with Lockyer. Sure Lockyer's first season at 5/8 wasn't absolutely tremendous, but you knew as soon as Locky came on the scene he was going to be a superstar. You can usually tell pretty quickly. Now I think that Hunt/Norman could become quite good players, but I very much doubt they will come anywhere near the status of superstar that Locky was.

We need something better than solid to take us all the way.

What do you guys think about this?

Not much. The same drivel we've heard in recent weeks. JT would give us 3-4 seasons at or near his best. Either of which is going to be FAR better than anything we will see from Wallace, Norman and probably Hunt.

Wayne stuck with Locky because he was a superstar. Real talent, identified, signed by the Broncs, developed and not let go of, in favour of duds. Which is the situation we have at present.

JT would give us a real premiership chance up to about 2015-2016. By then we should be able to find another half option to replace him, internally or externally.

This reasoning is ridiculous. No player plays forever, but this constant mindset of "developing" or "building" has to change. One cannot "build" forever. Sooner rather than later, people paying the builders demand a result from all of that "building".

We've been "building" ever since we won the 2006 premiership. Unfortunately we're trying to build on a foundation of marshmallow now. I'd rather see us build on a foundation of concrete...

So many of the players we've built are now killing it in other clubs. We need to redress this by getting a few to plug the holes we have.

Couple of injury updates thanks to the Courier Mail.

Thaiday, Reed & McCullough all had shoulder reconstructions.

Hannant (wrist/elbow), Dodds (groin), Capewell (groin) & Whitchurch (nerve damage) also had surgery.

Glenn was ruled out the NZ test due to niggling injuries.

Thaiday won't play the All-Stars game and will be lucky to play in the trials. Similar story with Reed.

Not exactly news but the profile page on the Broncos website has been updated.

The profiles of Nat Barnes, Gerard Beale, Petero Civoniceiva, Matt Smith, Ben Te'o & Dan Wallace have been removed.

Unsure, might have to see what Seagulls has to say.

Right now, I'm just assuming they've been released from their contract.

Actually, I hear Frei is off to the Storm so scratch him.

Bugger.

The attitude of staying loyal to your players and not recruiting from outside doesn't really work so well when you can't hang on to your juniors. How did we lose him yet hang on to nuffies like Lui and Slyney

Hope you're right man, expecting big things of Mitch next season!

Just read it from IMA SHADOW on RLeague. Apparently his younger brothers have already signed & he's usually knows these things about players from that area.

Unsolved Mysteries: Mitchell Frei.

The up and coming talent from Albany Creek was reported to have signed with Melbourne earlier in the week by a well informed poster on RLeague. Front Row Forum users have been speculating young Mitchell's status at the club ever since and the current crop of training photos hasn't laid said discussion to rest.

This is said to be the only proof Frei is at the club but it's difficult to tell if it truly is Frei but a look alike in the guise of J. Wallace, Slyney or Oates.

Is that Mitchell Frei on the top right?

If you know anything more, report it here and prevent this case from being another Unsolved Mystery.

I'm a wannabe Robert Stack, wishing you a good evening.
