NEWCASTLE captain Danny Buderus has hit breaking point.
Buderus will miss Newcastle's crucial game against Sydney Roosters at EnergyAustralia Stadium on Saturday night after sustaining a grade-one medial ligament tear in his left knee in the Knights' 44-0 loss to Melbourne at Olympic Park on Monday night.
He might also miss the trip to Auckland for the game against the Warriors the following Saturday.
Buderus desperately needs a rest to relieve chronic Achilles tendonitis in both legs, so the knee injury could prove a blessing in disguise.
The grind of another torrid representative campaign and backing up for Newcastle has left the 29-year-old hooker physically exhausted and psychologically drained and he hopes a week or two on the sidelines will recharge him for the Knights' tightrope walk to the finals.
But the loss of their leader could not have come at a worse time for the Knights, who are already dealing with an injury crisis on par with the one they endured in 2005.
Of the 36 players to have played NRL this season, coach Brian Smith said just 21 were available for the Storm game and he faced a similar selection scenario this week.
Buderus saw Knights physician Neil Halpin yesterday and will have a scan today to confirm Halpin's preliminary diagnosis.
Halpin has not yet ruled Buderus out and will assess him later this week but expected the knee injury to keep him on the sideline "for a week or two".
"It's just not working for me playing like this," a frustrated Buderus said yesterday.
"It's hard to get your head around it because you know every game it's going to drive you nuts I didn't train all week until the day before the game [against Melbourne] and it felt awful."
Terence Seu Seu will likely fill in for Buderus against the Roosters.
Well can it get any worse
