Actually, the "belief that the World was flat" was a myth created by Washington Irving, an American author in the 18th century who was asked to write a biography of Christopher Columbus.

Columbus knew the World was round, and the church did too. It had done since the Greeks had proven it to be round about 3,000 years ago.

In truth people in the Middle Ages weren't as stupid as we have been led to believe but it suited America and their "aren't we clever for living here instead of horrible oppressive Europe" to think that way.

The author, (who also wrote the extremely popularLegend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle) was asked to write about Columbus and his journey of discovery, but he couldn't be bothered researching the historical archives he was given access to.

So he got the basics of the story right (enough for the story to be believable) and then embelished or completely made up the rest.

Columbus was searching for a trade route to India that was shorter than the established route. He knew the Earth was round, so he just guessed that if he sailed WEST he would approach India from the other side and save time and money and make himself and Spain fabulously wealthy.

The author of the story added in the part about the Church trying to stop him from doing it by claiming the World was flat etc and they were doomed to fall off the edge of the Earth. It was a complete fabrication.

The sad part is that the book was very popular and his word was taken to be fact and repeated so often that people today believe it to be true.

The Greeks actually established that the Earth was round simply by looking at an eclipse and noticing that the shadow of the Earth was completely round. Anyone who was able to look up at the sky knew this to be the truth. The Greeks also measured the circumference of the Earth using nothing more than a stick and a shadow. For evidence of how they did this please refer to Dr Karl Kruszlenicki's book "Never Mind the Bullocks, here's the science".
Excellent post...

bulldogs win...we attacked the other fans for no reason
bulldogs lose...our fans blow up because we apparently cant hack a loss...

this has happened at tigers games plenty in the past few years..why does everyone always finger the blame on us.
because you tards have a history of attacking other opposition supporters who are not wearing a bulltards jersey.

Excellent post...

Why thank you sir.

Just trying to add a little substance of an entirely different nature to the conversation. I hope Timmah didnt mind the diversion.

For the record, I've been to plenty of games involving the Dogs, including the one that started the original post and I've never found them to be a problem. But then I grew up on the terraces at West Ham in the 80's, so it would probably take alot to shock me.

One other point. What has a post count got to do with anything?
Timmah puts up teams lists every week etc and I'm sure all the work he does for the site increases post count. Woop de doo. I have about 20,000 posts on a totally different site and no one has ever said anything to me about that. It's not important. It's the internet equivalent of "your mum" comments. They're the comments of a person searching for inspiration and finding none.

Did the bullscum fans ever sort out their website disputes (from last year)??

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sp...ite-war-of-words/story-e6frexp9-1111118811627

BULLDOGS supporters have turned on one another with death threats, sexual innuendo, racism, prank calls and talk of gang bashings.
The Daily Telegraph can reveal two sets of fans on rival Bulldogs websites have become embroiled in a row that threatens to cause a racial divide among club fans.
Members of The Kennel fan website are angered a rival website, BluenWhite, has been set-up.
BluenWhite bloggers claim to have been terrorised on forums by The Kennel members and told they would be "mugged and bashed'' if they attend any Bulldog matches. Bulldogs chief executive Todd Greenberg described the war as "childish''.
The drama comes ahead of Saturday's fan day at Homebush. BluenWhite members fear for their safety with Matthew Attard, 18, of Port Macquarie, receiving a death threat and five prank calls yesterday.

He was also threatened with his life last year. "I was told by a bloke at The Kennel that they couldn't wait to see me at the Newcastle game and that they would 'f...ing kill me you fat c...','' Attard said.
"I'm not going to spend $300 and have a six-hour drive each way to Sydney for matches to put up with trouble. I'm a Bulldogs member who has spent thousands of dollars on merchandise and I watch all the games.
"The Kennel try to threaten and intimidate you. That's why we broke away and created our own site. There is a lot of racism on The Kennel. Having said that, 99 per cent of Bulldogs fans are great people. It is only the small minority that cause trouble.''
Danny Jarman, The Kennel's administrator, has been unable to find any evidence to substantiate the claims. "I can't find any evidence to back up the accusations,'' he said. "If I do find evidence, those people will be permanently barred.
"That kind of behaviour will not be tolerated. But it sounds like a storm in a teacup. The club has been through a lot and is now back on track. It doesn't need these accusations.''
But BluenWhite members claim people from The Kennel are posing as players and making threats. "It looks like players are threatening to bash their own fans,'' said Brendon Meynell, who helped set up BluenWhite.
"They (The Kennel) were upset about the new site. We were told not to turn up to any Bulldog events or we'd be mugged or bashed.''
Meynell believes racism has been prominent in the spat. "I am a white Kiwi and was told I was a `bloody white c...','' he said. "This has been going on for three months now. I went on to The Kennel website and asked for calm and they said people shouldn't listen to me and that we'd be shown how lebanese do things.
"They also called us homos and doctored up photos of us.''
Greenberg was attempting to play down the troubles among some fans. "We are pleased with preparations for our 2009 campaign and a childish feud among rival websites hardly warrants our attention,'' he said.
"It will not distract us as we look forward to catching up with Bulldog supporters and members at our fan day on Saturday.''
