Bulldogs Issue

TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE

As found on nrl.com...

Thank you for coming today to this news conference.

There are two areas that I want to address.

Firstly, I want to reiterate my comments from yesterday that it would be inappropriate to provide a running commentary on the police investigation.

However, I wish to make absolutely clear that the Bulldogs are fully cooperating with the police. I also make this appeal to the public to keep an open mind on this matter and ask them not to prejudge the outcome of the police investigation.

In that context, I am pleased to see that there is to be a police inquiry into the leaking of a confidential statement made to police.

Let the police do their work.

The seriousness of the allegations means that the presumption of innocence needs to be taken into account at all times.

The very fact that the issue has been raised means we need to do more to make sure that the club, and the League have the best possible systems in place to maintain its integrity.

Therefore, the second matter I want to talk about today is a separate issue about what constitutes appropriate behaviour by players off the field.

As you know, the Bulldogs Club has its own Code of Conduct, which addresses unacceptable behaviour.

In the last year we have worked with the NRL to build on our programs to assist the players in dealing with their roles and responsibilities.

However, I believe that more has to be done to ensure that players are beyond reproach, and that the club does everything within reason to ensure the welfare of its players.

Accordingly, the club will be reviewing its Code of Conduct and its practices with the assistance of external experts.

We will be examining practices in other sports, and other clubs to see what protocols they have installed to strive for the highest possible standards.

Without limiting our work, just a few of the initiatives we will be examining include;

• The effectiveness of player curfews
• Security personnel accompanying players while travelling.
• Early return from away matches.
• Review our support to players off the field including mentoring and leadership training.

I will be working with other clubs and the NRL to ensure that players meet the highest standards as we recognise that appropriate off-field behaviour must be an ongoing priority.

News Ltd is scanning the league forums. It would appear not everybody shares your view. Disgusting!

Not sure if you're having a go at me or not, but it is disgusting.

It's obvious that this woman feels as though she's been abused seriously enough to take the matter to the police, but I imagine a lot of league fans have instantly prejudged her as just some tart trying to get her bit from the Bulldogs team (bit being money, etc) in the form of these allegations.

It's evident that some fomr of abuse has occured as the reports tell us of bruising, scratches, etc.

Medical evidence may have proved bruising and the like occurred, but it doesn't prove the Bulldogs players did it. Furthermore, DNA testing is not going to prove sexual assault, because the issue is whether it was consentual sex or not. That is why in the mean time, UT, the players involved cannot be named and shamed. We have to view them as innocent for at least the time being.

I'm so shocked about the whole thing, it seems too huge for it to be real, (that's not to say it didn't happen.)

It kinda makes me think that if it did happen and 6 first grade rugby league professional footballers didn't have enough brain between them to think what this could get them all into and what it would do to rugby league and its supporters then jails the only place for them. People that dumb would never survive in day to day life.

i dont understand why all of a sudden this woman is becoming the baddie in all this. * edit*
the bulldogs players arent making it any easier for the bulldogs management. from SMH today:

Just minutes before Mr Mortimer spoke at Belmore Oval yesterday, one of the club's players at a training session was heard abusing photographers from the players' tunnel. The player allegedly encouraged his teammates to "pull our dicks out and come all over them".

Another player was seen urinating on the field.

What a bunch of knobs...

Just because it is in the paper doesn't mean it is true.

Papers have got millions of $$$ to pay legal disputes, the owners of the site are not related to these Billionaires.

It will all come out and they could be subpoened

from foxsports

NEW South Wales police today expressed concern that a string of private investigations into an alleged sexual assault by Canterbury Bulldogs players could hamper their own inquiries.

A woman has told police she had been sexually assaulted by several Bulldogs players in Coffs Harbour last Sunday.

The Bulldogs, the Daily Telegraph and the National Rugby League are all reported to be conducting their own investigations.

Detective Chief Inspector Jason Brereton, who is in charge of the police investigation, today stressed the alleged victim is of paramount importance.

"If witnesses are available to the NRL, their first port of call should be the NSW police," he told ABC radio.

"Nobody else but the police prosecutes the matter and if there was to be charges laid, it won't be the

Daily Telegraph, it won't be the Canterbury Bulldogs and it won't be the NRL."

He said there are always difficulties with any potential prosecution of a person with a high profile.

"What might happen, of course, if there's evidence discovered that is not discovered by the police, then not only is the witness who is presenting the evidence required by any possible or future prosecution, the people involved, be it a representative involved or a Daily Telegraph reporter, those people may be subpoenaed.

"Ultimately, the evidence should come out."

Detective Chief Inspector Brereton urged anyone with information on the alleged assault should make their first port of call the Coffs Harbour police.

I refuse to make any comment on the allegations themselves.

I'm just disgruntled that this great game is again receiving negative press. Seemed that things were sailing along smoothly and then this happens. In fact, disgruntled is probably not strong enough a word

We moderate this forum Pred, what is done in the Panthers is their concern. The Mods in here don't have the access to open posts in the Panthers forum either. If this is a self indulgent wankfest then it seems YOUR in the right place. If your not happy complain to admin about it.

If you are not a moderator in a forum you cannot lock threads in that forum, So I'm guessing an admin did it, so while your busy sticking your little emoticons in I suggest to get the facts right first   Then you wouldn't look like the clown your looking right now   :? :? To pm an adminn just look down the bottom of the page "Who's online" find a name that is yellow in colour, eg Willow, Legend, Ozbash etc, click on the name and the option is there to pm them. While your at it, just check with them that what I've told you re Mods powers is in fact the truth. I'll sign off now.

Cheers.

The all powerful and morally correct moderator.   by the way You forgot to add cool in that sentance 8)
