Merritt's defence is one of his strengths? HAHAHAHAHAHA! He is a sieve in defence.

Just want to pick up on this point before another "myth is perpetuated". Seems people still judge Merritt on his defence when he first came to grade. According to the NRL, 09 missed tackles and error (avergage per game in brackets) stats for some of the fullbacks are:-

Merritt - 23 games for 30 missed tackles (1.30), 23 errors (1.00)
Patten - 25 games for 37 missed tackles (1.48), 31 errors (1.24)
Bowen - 20 games for 40 missed tackles (2.00), 28 errors (1.40)
Slater - 25 games for 50 missed takles (2.00), 43 errors (1.72)
Gidley - 21 games for 34 missed takles (1.62), 38 errors (1.81)
Hayne - 25 games for 41 missed takles (1.64), 34 errors (1.36)
Boyd - 22 games for 29 missed takles (1.32), 21 errors (0.95)McKinnon - 21 games for 43 missed takles (2.05), 32 errors (1.52)
K.Hunt - 23 games for 49 missed takles (2.13), 24 errors (1.04)

Seems to me he is Mr. Reliable and an outstanding defender (so far as NRL fullbacks go :D)

Personally, I can't wait until Burgess gets smashed in the four nations. Hope it sticks. It would just be a killer if he has to sit the first half of next season out... What a hoot.

Fail. :lol::lol:

We could have had this bloke if we'd tried harder. Can't help but think he made the right decision though.

Have to say no one else was in the race with him and the same will be the case with his brothers. ;-)

Regardless, Wests will have a good year this year, not that you'd know it from the negativity that permeates the forum here.

Positive thoughts!!!!

bullsh*t we weren't in the race. The only reason we didn't sign him is because we couldn't afford to pay a transfer fee to Bradford. Fact.

Not even close.

Fact.

No other club wanted to pay a transfer fee. Given he wanted to come this year, it was a formality he'd go to Souths. Souths weren't even in the picture until Crowe had a personal visit.

It's a nonsense to suggest he wouldn't have signed with another club for 2011 had Souths not been in the picture.

WTF?

You were trying to tell me Wests would have signed him if it weren't for the transfer fee!!!

That is the nonsense.

Souths had signed him from 2011 before Wests were even mentioned.

Manly were second cab off the rank in any case.

Yeah Well I suppose I exaggerated a little there. What I took issue with was your claim that no other club was close to signing him; it would have been was if Souths were not the only club able to offer the transfer fee.

It's certainly a nonsense that Souths had signed him before the Tigers were mentioned; as I recall we were the first club mentioned as interested and we were definitely mentioned Crowe telephoned Burgess up and met with him. It was that meeting that Burgess described as the pivotal moment in his decision to sign up with Souths.

Anyway, the important thing is that you lucky bastards got him.

True.

I only bumped this thread because N.C. made a complete clown of himself.

I'm not so sure I did, Skip... It's fair to say that my daydreams were a little off the mark, but there's still plenty of time for accident or injury to cut the kid down for a week or three. (Quite aside from the fact that I was being a bit of a farkwit in order to try and get this thread back on target...)

I like the look of this Burgess bloke. Souths are in for a big year...
