Wa government making press conference stating desire for team.

A PNG team based out of Cairns?

That's the dumbest proposal put forward. It's even dumber than the Rockhampton-based Central Queensland Capras entering the NRL. Only 15% of Papua New Guineans have access to reliable electricity. The GDP per capita of PNG is about $3.5k USD. Port Moresby is not connected by road to any of the country's other major cities.

How about we add Pacifique Trieze to the Queensland Cup and see how they go?

Their Queensland Cup bid is supported by the FFRXIII. New Caledonia has a GDP per capita of $37k USD. A Pacifique Trieze team based out of Noumea, New Caledonia has the potential to benefit rugby league in New Caledonia and France. If it progresses to the NRL then it could take a few games to Port Moresby and recruit much of its talent from PNG, France, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji and New Zealand. The club wouldn't need to be funded by the Australian Government.

Last year the Mackay Cutters didn't want to travel to Port Moresby due to the fatal political unrest that was plaguing the city.

How many NRL players will want to play 12 games a year in Port Moresby?

Maybe they play just in surrounding nations.
Lol, at wa govt holding emergency presser immediately after story broke about pasifika being frontrunner.

The Cowboys catchment is Cairns to the north, Mt Isa to the west and south to Mackay (and some of CQ as well).

To take out Cairns from that catchment would be a disaster and virtually a third to half the Cowboys supporter base, whilst leaving that to support an NRL team.

This is clearly evidenced by the crowds they get when they have poorly scheduled home games (Thu, Sun Evening etc)

@Get Rid of The Donkeys and I can agree on one thing, Cairns is a stupid idea, and I'm a Cairns local.

Not only that, they might get more actual NRL games there than they would normally as "cowboys" have a brand new stadium, as they wont bother now, so you can still be a cowboys supporter and live in cairns, drive 4 hours south and watch your team play, absolutely nobody is stopping you, and you can watch this new franchise play a few games there in your home town, see them train in your local area, aswell as see them play in p.n.g on TV, can even see the cowboys live in cairns as an away game and as trials too, as they did against the dolphins a few weeks back... either way cairns is the closest Australian town to base a franchise that they can send to png for home games, i personally dont agree with the samoa, tonga, pasifika angle of it, i think if the aus govt is involved it should only be to garner favor with p.n.g, and have that team representing that far north qld/torres strait/png area anything else is just being disingenuous to the Pacific Islands... they can set up a similar team in NZ, maybe around Hamilton for a side like that, like RU has, but do it better, thus creating a NZ derby

A nomadic team with no cultural ties to Cairns but relying on less then 150k people for support, all the while telling PNG "sorry but your country is a shithole" doesn't seem the most well thought out iniative.

And what funds are going to be flowing for a stadium, so soon after one was built in Townsville?

It just doesn't stack up.

Stadium in Cairns had been proposed for the Olympics, they wont be at that shithole for long, as for population, the cowboys in 1995 were introduced with a population of 113k, so cairns is fine especially since the team isn't playing there fulltime, its a base of operations, like Redcliffe for the dolphins, they play 3 games a year at kayo stadium, the rest/bulk at suncorp.. i dont see this any different...
Whatever your bias beliefs/opinions are on this bid.
It doesn't matter really its what they (arlc) want, the aus govt wants it, or moreso wants to pay for it, and having a PNG presence in the competition will do wonders, like the West Indies did for cricket...
The talent pool will increase due to more players coming from their digitel cup competition, and with an Australian base/training facility the govt wont feel to unhinged about the innerworking of it if it were set up in png, plus you try and get craig bellamy to run a side in PNG, when you have the option to get him to live in cairns instead, that goes for any off contract player and coaching staff, the best part about it .... ITS IN QUEENSLAND!!! (....You know that song)

Wheres Papua new guinea? ITS IN QLD!!!
