Stadium in Cairns had been proposed for the Olympics, they wont be at that shithole for long, as for population, the cowboys in 1995 were introduced with a population of 113k, so cairns is fine especially since the team isn't playing there fulltime, its a base of operations, like Redcliffe for the dolphins, they play 3 games a year at kayo stadium, the rest/bulk at suncorp.. i dont see this any different...
Whatever your bias beliefs/opinions are on this bid.
It doesn't matter really its what they (arlc) want, the aus govt wants it, or moreso wants to pay for it, and having a PNG presence in the competition will do wonders, like the West Indies did for cricket...
The talent pool will increase due to more players coming from their digitel cup competition, and with an Australian base/training facility the govt wont feel to unhinged about the innerworking of it if it were set up in png, plus you try and get craig bellamy to run a side in PNG, when you have the option to get him to live in cairns instead, that goes for any off contract player and coaching staff, the best part about it .... ITS IN QUEENSLAND!!! (....You know that song)

Wheres Papua new guinea? ITS IN QLD!!!

I've not seen any stadium proposed for Cairns, got any links?

The Cowboys are a regional team appealing to the catchment of NQ (and a large part of rural QLD outside that). Even then we went broke almost immediately and if it wasn't for News $$ we wouldn't exist today

When they were introduced that's how it stacked up, it's always been more then about Townsville.

Cairns on its own doesn't stack, and it's even more untenable when it's FIFO not even aimed at Cairns locals, and aimed at another Country and culture.

It makes more sense for an existing Sydney team to link with PNG and to do this. But even that's ludicrous.

Using the Windies as an example is bizarre. Since the early 90s they have been nothing short of an unmitigated disaster and there manufactured nature has been there ultimate downfall.

Darwin would make more sense, and it still no makes sense lol
Darwin is further to png, than Cairns is to png.
Aside for that, the major and most important criteria is that CAIRNS IS IN QLD..ffs you guys are blind
This is all about increasing the footprint for more qld talent, and more qld teams, sure they could set up this base in perth, or darwin, or Auckland if they wanted to, Cairns is not near SEQ, not in NSW, and is a another News ltd city that they run their propaganda papers thru,
i know i do their subscription mailouts for a living..
Cairns will set up a similar rivalry with Townsville, albiet 4 hours away,
We all know png cant afford the NRL, the govt want this over the line, nrl want another qld team, they don't want a world beater, and theyll settle for mildly competitive, if that, they want their "Sydney" clubs to do that or Broncos, which ever suits them best... but not the raiders, knights, titans, cowboys and probably not these guys either, its just a feather in NRL cap...
Hell even Cowboys dont even care about Cairns no more

The Cowboys catchment is Cairns to the north, Mt Isa to the west and south to Mackay (and some of CQ as well).

To take out Cairns from that catchment would be a disaster and virtually a third to half the Cowboys supporter base, whilst leaving that to support an NRL team.

This is clearly evidenced by the crowds they get when they have poorly scheduled home games (Thu, Sun Evening etc)

@Get Rid of The Donkeys and I can agree on one thing, Cairns is a stupid idea, and I'm a Cairns local.
Shouldn’t have neglected them for so long

watch the cowboys now try and make up for 20 years of neglect

This is just trolling now. The proximity of Cairns to PNG is a nothing burger in the context of crowd support or economics

Why would up cannibalise the existing support and crowd of a regional team for an even smaller regional team? It makes no economic sense.

SEQ is the only logical spot a future NRL could go, and even that's a while off given the Dolphins just started.

Totally wrong

every single point

but I get it

your club is more important to you than what’s good for rugby league

Most humble day of my life 🙂
What about a 2nd Melbourne team
Both teams could Play a few games in Tasmania and Adelaide per year
Like storm has before

You've not rebutted one single point.

In fact you've never rebutted one single point.

This pipedream will never eventuate.
Ok.... but it is written by news ltd, spoken by politis and backed up by st.PVL, its got merit... plus cairns being in Townsville catchment (even tho thats archaic) is like saying canberra is in Melbournes catchment, or vice versa

It's not catchment in the sense of Sydney NRL juniors, it's economic and cultural. Mel and Canb don't follow the same sport, don't have the same Premier, don't share the same climate and lifestyle.

Cairns (which is 300km closer to Townsville then Melb is to Canb) can't support an NRL team in its own, neither can Townsville.

It requires the entire NQ area to work, and even then it's been a struggle.

Splitting a regional team in half makes no sense. Cowboys are finally getting into a good position off the field. In fact the most commercially successful regional team the NRL has Why you'd want to put that at risk I have no idea. Its interesting we haven't yet heard from them since this broke, Id imagine they arent in favour lol

Id imagine, murdoch already gave his blessing a few weeks back... feels pretty coincidental that the cows dropped the pride and cutters recently to fend for themselves, and its not splitting it in half, its taking a third, or maybe a quarter, it is called FAR NORTH QLD for a reason

The reason is purely geographic and nothing to do with economy or population.

Justifying a$400M stadium for 4 to 6 games annually is going to be a fun political discussion also

Whats Murdoch got to do with it?

If it’s all or most games in PNG as it should be then travel would probably be easier and less time consuming overall being based in Sydney or Brisbane. Especially if they get looked after in the draw.

Cairns - 1h25m flight to Port Moresby but travelling every week. No direct flights from Cairns to some places for away games like Newcastle, Canberra, Auckland etc.

Brisbane - 3h10m flight to PM. Would get to remain in SEQ for 3 away games. Direct flights everywhere the NRL plays.

Sydney - 3h55m flight, longer again but could remain in the Sydney area for the vast majority of their away games plus Newcastle, Central Coast, Wollongong bus trip distance. Direct flights everywhere else.

Albanese and V'landys are more demented than Biden if they think this ridiculous PNG/Cairns proposal is worthy of an NRL licence.

What on Earth are they putting in the drinking water in Sydney?

People in "the harbour city" should swap to bottled water before they end up like Peter Fitzsimons.
