the commentators on ABC were discussing who would be new zealands greatest all round cricketer - not neccessarily greatest all rounder there's a difference - so the question is, who is it?

At first i thought this was just another crap thread from TT.

But, although Hadlee is obviously the greatest Kiwi cricketer of all-time you can make an argument that Cairns is the more complete all-rounder of the two.

Hadlee would be a 10/10 with the ball but probably a 5/10 with the bat. Cairns though would be a 8/10 with the ball and 7/10 with the bat. He's one of the most balanced all-rounders of all-time, in the mould of Miller and Botham.

Cairnsy also happens to be one of my all-time favourites.

His raw talent, crash-bang style and charisma are what cricket entertainment should be all about. True legend.

I was always a huge fan of Chris Cairns' father Lance. He was an all rounder too. A pretty handy bowler but one of the biggest hitters of the ball i have ever seen. He used to shave down the sides of the top of the bat (for either a better swing, or to minimize the risk of getting an edge, i dont really know). But the one-handed six out of the SCG against Lillee was a classic moment for me. I'm sure it went out of the ground, but i guess i could be wrong, it was ages ago lol.

Anyone old enough to remember him ? Twiz im looking right at you lol (Agree about Hadlee, he was just amazing).

There is a one handed six in this vid, but its not the big one against Lillee. This one is against Ken MacLeay.

EDIT : Oops there is one against Lillee too ... but Im sure there was a bigger one at the SCG. I'll have to look for it lol.

Vettori is only an all-rounder against Bangladesh. Then again Dizzy Gillespie is too.

I never got to see Hadlee play since I'm not that old, but in the few occasions I got to see Cairns, he was crash-bang amazing with the bat, and solid with the ball.

Spot on, he is a grafter at best I would rate Mitch Johnson having better batting potential than Vettori..

I have never seen Hadlee play myself so went for Cairns it may be worth putting big Jake Oram on there if you include Vettori

I never realised how good cairns was until i saw his batting average and bowling average 33.53 and 29.4 respectively, Ian Botham's averages were 33.34 and 28.4
