Wally Lewis is the best I've ever seen. He controlled the tempo of the game and changed matches through ball-playing and ball-running. He was a great defender and fast. He did all of this while playing in a competition that wasn't as professionalised as its southern counterpart. To do what he did, against players who earned more and had better resources, is nothing short of incredible.

Combined Brisbane's victory in the National Knock-Out competition in the mid 80s has to be the proudest moment in the history of Queensland RL. Without Lewis it wouldn't have happened. Then there's that game in 88 or 89 when Queensland were down to just 12 players at the SCG/SFS, and Lewis led the team to victory. Finest performance in Origin history. Even the Sydney public stood up and applauded.
Wally is my number 2 and Joey number 3. Smith does everything they did, over a longer period of time, whilst playing in the middle of the field. That’s why I choose him for best.

Only to some.
His legacy is talent, perseverance and toughness. Ultimate professional and winner.

important to remember history wont remember the incesent whining of the pissants who dont like Smith. History will remember him as the easily the greatest player of his generation and right in there with the greatest players to ever lace a boot.

No amount of salt from people upset he's been this good for this long will change that.

Do you have comprehension issues?

quote one post where people challenge his playing ability

you think history will forget the salary cap scandal and his behaviour during the McKinnon injury?

No chance

forever a stain ( and justifiably so) on his legacy

history is remembered by those who watch the sport. Plenty remember the skill and just as many remember the chiropractor moves to “awkwardly” or “clumsily” or “accidentally” injure someone - he knows what he’s doing. I still remember an origin game where he elbowed Hayne in the back after he scored - anyone else and it’s an 8 point try.

Many have said that if he didn’t do the chiropractor moves he would be the goat, but the question really is if he didn’t do the chiropractor moves would he have been as good?

Yes, our children and grandchildren will not hold the emotional baggage around the McKinnon incident, it wont be in the first 10 paragraphs of his storied career, and all they'll have the snide jealous remarks of old senile merkins re: his alledged involvement in the salary cap scandal.

His legacy will be stained for this generation, maybe some in the next pending on who they've got talking to them about the game. After that? Good luck.

So yes. History will largely forget those incidents and all will be left is his playing ability and his career. Which right now places him as the GOAT of his sport.

You asked a question re his legacy, i answered. You didnt like the answer. The comprehension issues are all you're friend. Perhaps it will help to lower your daily salt intake, it's red sea level shit you've got going on here.

But yeah the guy defending the most reviled RL player in modern history is the mindless sycophant. Certainly not the guy repeating the same tired narrative spewed by opposition fans sick of his unfathomable run of succes have run for eions.

Hate all you like. He's brutalised my team more than most, we had a solid 10 year (felt that way at least) period of never f**king beating the merkin, literally didnt beat him in about 18 straight games. He owned us.
He just owned us again this past week. Broke my god damn heart.

Im from Penrith originally, was a passionate NSW fan, he owned us there too. For an unprecedented decade long dominance, he had help sure, but that was built around him.
I've got no reason to like the man. I should hate him.

History wont record your salt, . It will record his emmaculate record. Simple. You can come to terms with that, or you cant. History wont give a f**k either way

Playing ability - great player and undisputably so, history will record him as the GOAT to this date. Those are facts that will recorded by history.
Human traits - Your, my or anyone on this website's opinion on his personality and traits will not be live beyond this generation. No one will give a shit. All that will be left of his legecy will be his playing record, which as we both agree, is impeccable.

i know that is upsetting for you, but it is what it is.

Smith is a cheat in every sense of the word.

I'll never forget a game between my Cowboys and the vile Storm at Lang Park in 2016. Melbourne were crowding the ruck and taking an eternity to roll off the tackled player. The ref, for once, penalised them. Smith threw an almighty tantrum that was clearly dissent, almost going as far ad to accuse the referee of favouritism while yelling like a 2yo brat. Not only was he not binned, the referee stopped penalising Melbourne's indiscretions in the ruck, which allowed them to get on top. At the end of the game Thurston had a shot at field goal to level the score, but Smith, who never got back square at marker, ran out from a clearly offside position before the ball cleared the ruck. It should have been a penalty to Cowboys, with a conversion right in front of the posts for the win on full-time. The referee allowed play to continue. Thurston never whined about it.

Smith doesn't really know what it's like to fight tooth and nail all your life and be robbed or come up short. He did lose 3 Origin series between 03-05 and the 06 GF before he tasted success, but he was still young and had many opportunities ahead of him.

So when was the last time a player was penalised for being offside running at a field goal attempt?

It doesn’t happen... except in a tigers game years ago the ref had the canastas to blow a penalty, and they lost the game as a result. And the ref was criticised for it!

So if you’re offside looking to charge down a field goal, you’re a cheat in every sense of the word....

Half the players in the competition are cheats in every sense of the word by that rationale.

So you’re argument is that because in 100 years no one will remember what a despicable merkin he is , we should just forget about it now?

Not me champ

forever a cheat and that’s the least of it

I’m also of the camp that if you’re getting you’re home Reno pid for by club , outside your contract , you’d know that as well

at least he’s acknowledged it was an issue and apologised, oh sorry that never happened either

I was at that origin game.... it’s a myth we all stood up and cheered him. More gobsmacked he (and they) still managed to beat us... We still hated him but ultimately respected Wally. The wanker chants had pretty much faded by that stage.

However we did cheer and applaud him in the 1990 semi finals when he came on as a reserve for the broncos against the Raiders at the SFS, after coming back from a broken arm.. and after word had leaked the broncos were getting rid of him. I was at all games that series and in the second half of this one we were all chanting “We want Wally... “... eventually he came on and the crowd went nuts. The broncos got flogged but Wally was the highlight... it was his last game for the broncos and I think we all realised that this giant in the sport was coming to the end of the road.

However the biggest respect I saw was when I first saw him play, against the sharks at Shark Park on a Saturday arvo... sharks flogged the broncos (which then was an absolute shock of a result) but in the days where the crowd still could run on the field at the end of the game, Wally got absolutely mobbed... must have been on the ground at least 15 minutes signing autographs... he couldn’t get off the ground as there were hundreds of people around him.. I managed to get in up close eventually.. and remember seeing a kid of about 10 years old in a sharks jumper just staring at Wally like a god.

He was a god. Just a god all of NSW hated but reflecting on it now, I absolutely loved everything about Wally Lewis - even though I hated him for so long.

Most of the criticism of Cameron Smith is nonsensical and/or hypocritical.

Take the Mackinnon incident, loaded with emotion such as it was. Smith bore a huge amount of criticism, and still does years later. Let it not be forgotten that one of the dirtiest, most filthiest talentless players in Beau Scott was lifting blokes earlier in that game and had the hide to complain about Maclean's tackle. This video gives insight:

A few weeks later the same Newcastle player, with 'riseforalex' scrawled on his jersey completely unironically no doubt, deliberately tried to seriously injure Johnathon Thurston, nearly breaking his neck in the process. This is after the whistle was blown it should be reminded. That was cool though because...NSWanker.

The contrast and response of this could not be starker.

Nary a word of criticism is uttered for one of the most disgusting acts I've ever witnessed - Beau Scott deliberately trying to drive a players head into the ground while bending his neck. Quite the opposite, he is lauded as a 'hard man' and we still see images of his tough guy act shared on these forums.

This is why the faux-outrage about Smith must be kept in perspective. Much of it is perpetuated by people who are unable to form their own opinions, and are swept up in group think e.g "if I make a nasty post about Cameron Smith I will get plenty of likes".

It has been said earlier, Smith is the greatest player of the fully professional era, just as Lewis was before him the semi-pro days. A record of unparalleled success that should deservingly be capped off with a premiership on Sunday. The Rugby League world will be watching.

HE didnt own anyone. Rugby League is a team sport. It's not f**king Tennis.

Smith is extremely lucky to have played for a club that the NRL needs to be successful- to the point that even after being caught cheating the game Melbourne was allowed to keep the nucleus of a side they assembled whilst cheating.

Reading your overblown hyperbole I half expected you to go on to describe the night you cried when you met Smith at a nightclub and had the honour to give him rim job and a blowie in a side alley outside - No doubt you would have gargled a little and swallowed.

Beau Scott was a vile grub and should have been put in the loony bin. I'll never forget a game in Townsville where Thurston outsmarted the nut good and proper. Thurston positioned himself on Scott's side of the field and jogged towards the sideline with his back to Scott. Scott couldn't resist the opportunity to put a cheap shot on Thurston, so he ran out of the line and put on a hard hit. Thurston was wise to it and passed the ball to a player back on the inside, who ran right through the gaping hole where Scott would have been defending if he didn't take the bait.
