Is anyone really that surprised?

Just watching Bellamy and his boys talking about last years GF, saying he'll certainly be missed, I mean that had to be pre-recorded some time ago so they definitely wouldve known he was retiring. He wasnt named in the team this year, he hasnt been named in the Storms 30 man squad, he was carried off the field at Suncorp. He just wanted to make it official close to the start of the season or when his statue was revealed.

Anyway good luck to him. At the same I would say thank fk, I would say the referees wont be put under pressure now, especially Cummins and Sutton lol.

But seriously, the most appearences by any player, the most points, most Origins, 3 premierships as captain, its a massive achievement.

Is he the greatest? Hard to say when Ive watched the likes of Johns, Lockyer, JT, Langer over the years. I might answer that question in years to come.

Of course the Storm knew a long time ago. He timed it for today publicly as he was going to be in melbourne and he wanted to speak to the players first. So much butt hurt by people who don’t know him and whose lives are not impacted one little bit by what Cameron smith decides lol.

Haha. Blah blah anyone who criticises him is butt-hurt blah blah have a cry etc.

Cameron Smith to me is one of the greatest players of all-time. Genius. Absolute superstar on the field.

Absolute c**k smoker of a person.

Announcing your retirement 24 hours out from the start of a season is ultimate c**k smoker behaviour. Grubby f**k, cheated the cap as his own manager, ref manipulator, and anything else off field that you might want to believe.

You can actually think both about a person - that they were a superstar player but a sub-par human. That's where I'm at.
Yawn.

Doesn't really matter when he announced his retirement, the comments here would all be the same. Deadset no win situation.

The media have been all over him in recent weeks, especially since the NRL announced the push back of squad finalisation until August 1st.

I see this as a mercy killing. Instead of forcing us to endure another 5 months of "Will he? Won't he?" articles, he's used his first public appearance since the end of the season to announce it.

The fact that it coincides with the start of the NRL season is on the Melbourne Storm who scheduled the statue unveiling.

Contrary to what the LU hive mind says, I don't believe Cameron Smith to be the puppet master behind every decision made in NRL circles despite his GOAT status. And I also don't believe he cares for the spotlight that everyone wants to shine on him.

Congrats on the stellar career legend.

I wonder after the wash up how old mate is getting a payday this season?
Probably like old Cooper ‘2 jobs’ Cronk - can’t believe more hasn’t been made of that situation. He’a got a permanent position with the Roosters, but is allowed to carry out some ‘consultancy’ with the Storm as this was a pre-agreed role from before he signed with Roosters.
Sounds awfully like the very thing the Tigers got pinged for with Robbie.
Clearly the Storm have agreed to carry on paying him in retirement as a way of hiding his true contract value, yet NRL360 were just happy to move on. It’s very rare I’ll support Buzz, but he was the only one who half mentioned that angle, but he was too shit scared to go on with it.

I am so glad he didn't bow down to Hoops and co who were pushing him out of the game last year. He is an angel compared to those so called journos.

Ppl just line up to have a crack anyway he would have been criticised whenever he retired.

The guys career is over one of the best ever, now the competition rolls on without him.

He would've been criticised, but not for retiring 24 hours out from the comp. I heard him say he hadn't made his mind up until now. Well he should have had the decency to do so, even last week would have been sweet as. The Wednesday of round 1, what a chump. He would've got loads of column inches whenever he did it but he chose to usurp the game, which is always bigger than any player

No they wouldn't have, because if he'd announced his retirement earlier it wouldn't have been 24 hours out from the comp. Therefore very different comments. Retires early, more win than what he did.

If he'd not played by round 1, we'd have presumed he wasn't playing on wouldn't we? Not 5 months of will he, won't he.

And bullshit on the statue. The fact is most players in the NRL would not even have considered announcing a retirement a day before the season. The statue in itself before the season is fine, who cares it's a poorly made piece of steel that looks more like David Gallop playing dummy half. But no chance Cooper Cronk retires on the Wednesday of round 1. Hell even Paul Gallen wouldn't do that.

Why is there a cone of silence around this guy, especially in media circles? Hey everyone - it's OK to say someone is one of the best of all time and a rubbish bloke. Warney is still a national hero whilst carrying both on his shoulders.

The timing of smith’s retirement announcement has no impact on my opinion of him.

His all time merkin status was cemented the moment he stood over a paralysed man blaming him for breaking his own neck. Arguing the toss over a penalty while a bloke is literally crying “I can’t move my legs” mere feet from you is world class asshole material.
