I'd imagine someone who wasn't an attention seeking whore would have announced this in November last year...
He actually believed clubs where going to pay top dollar for a bloke close to his 40s, he realised he wasn’t going to get so he retired.

A champion player, I wish the Broncos had have signed him instead of the other Melbourne Storm hooker but that's life.

I thought he showed plenty of promise in his early years but didn't really stand out in an era of running hookers like Bedsy, Priddis and Wing. However as he got older his grasp on the game evolved and by 2006 he became the best player in the game. He just made everyone look better around him since he had such a good read on the opposition defence. He knew when to get on the front foot, knew when to mix it up around the ruck or to get the ball out of his own half.

He rarely ever seemed flustered. He seemed to always play with tremendous composure which usually gave his teams an edge and allow them to nail those key moments. His list of achievements is remarkable but it's the influence he had on the 9 position that will remain his greatest legacy.

A true Rugby League legend.

I hated him when my teams played him, but did similar with Wally too. Got nothing but respect for what he’s achieved, especially for being the biggest villain of the modern era, love it. Wally was the same of his era..

They are the two best I’ve ever seen. Not for pure skill, for everything they brought to the match...

Smith was the last of the modern day greats still playing.. now he’s retired.. it’s watching the last Holden roll off the production line.. now we’re seeing bog standard SUV’s and Korean plasticware everywhere...

I honestly believe there are no true greats now playing in the NRL. Benji Marshall is the only possible contender...

And there’s only a few potential greats, a handful at most... particularly in the playmaking positions...

Great career, won more titles by lightyears ahead of everyone else, one of leagues true greats in its history.
