Hey guys,

Look I would like someone to clear this up for me, I mean we are apparantly approaching players the last couple of weeks, Shackleton, Fitzgibbon, Poore, Fien, Bell, White etc..

But then I'm getting other rumours that we are right on the salary cap and can't afford anyone,

What is the go? Can we afford players for next year, Or what?

It's really hard to comprehend.

Maybe in Hindy's new contract for 2010, he will accept less and take more in his last year thus freeing some cash for next year

Next year we are losing a large number of players and we have also back ended some contracts which means that some of the salary from players lost will got towards those that we have kept on the books. However, yes we have some money to spend if we don't retain or retain at a lower cost, those off contract players. The problem is with players like Mortimer and Albert Kelly is that their contracts are incentive only and means we pay them next year for their performance this year, we are trying to minimize that expenditure to continue to attract players to the club next year and not fall, 10, 20 or 50 thousand short on getting all the players we need to start to rebuild this club next year.

The Salary cap is a balancing act, both sides of the story you are hearing is correct to a point. But over all yes we can afford players.

we just have to be smarter on who we keep and who we let go ...

and pay the players what they are worth, that's why you need to be good at that and the rest is right on with what mits said, balance ...

To me that says they're assuming this year is a write off. I don't care what management say, we should still be picking the best 17 every week in the meantime rather than hoping we'll be able to sign top notch players for next season when there's not very many high profile ones on the market.

Well thats your take on it. I don't think anyone is saying we aren't picking the best 17 each week that are available, more that if Morts or Albee get picked that it will have ramifications for next years cap that we will have to work around.

Cordoba, Hauraki, Lowrie, Oake GONE!
Cayless & Burt POSSIBLY UK!
Learoyd-Lahrs, Shackleton, Poore IN!
Develop Mortimer and maybe resign Kelly.
Doubt it will happen that way but would like to see it.

It makes sense to re-sign talent we can actually benifit from and not keep the surplus. Our forwards clearly need a shake up and ofcourse another No.7.

Well I'd say in a way we're both right. But Daniel Anderson is between a rock and a hard place because he'd be well aware that any promotion of second tier players will count towards next years cap, which will in turn result on our recruitment and retention for next year. Which is going to make his team selections for the remainder of the year even more difficult.

I am sure the bulldogs used a whole heap of players last year because they needed to because of the injuries and rest of it, but they still purchased a whole new team, so when you look at it i am sure we can get 3 players and worry about the cap later on, and looking at who we can let go or cut, we have room to move we just have to do it and back the coach ...

The Bulldogs had the advantage of releasing Sonny Bill Williams, Brent Sherwin and Wille Mason without payouts for season 2008... So they were a million dollars under the salary cap for last year. They ended for front loading existing player contracts for last season so they could spend more this year. Completely different situation to us.

If we back-end too many contracts, wouldn`t that just mean that in three years time or so, we`ll be back in the same situation we`re in right now?

To me it says they're doing their jobs; they have to manage next year's cap as well as this year's.

BUt then it will be someone else's problem and we would've already one a premiership so noone cares and just blames it on the salary cap of a successful team :D
