Sorry, I didn't see this post from Danish. You just highlighted one of the things I mentioned in the previous post (I underlined it). However, with the working thing, yes I agree it is easier to pull that off compared to the uni stuff, but surely would've found it odd if the workplace required a certain uniform to be worn or he didn't have any documents from the workplace and not file any tax returns (unless he was hypothetically earning less than $18200/year, which I highly doubt would've been the case)

You'd think even a halfway involved parent would perhaps ask attend their Uni graduation, or at least be interested enough to ask to see their degree (which I'm guessing the bloke didn't create a forgery of) or perhaps questioned at some point over the 3 years why they didn't have a single textbook in the house (unless of course the guy bought all these and pretended to study for exams etc).

the lying about having a job part is much easier as it just involves leaving the house each morning and not returning till after 5pm, but the uni stuff you'd think even the most naive parent would pick up on.

I was thinking more of Willy Loman.

And they say you can't write stuff like this.

Back in the late 80s there was this Yugoslav guy who worked as a factory hand at the company I was employed by. He worked in the dirtiest part of the place mixing rubber from scratch which had carbon black in it. Imagine charcoal but 1000 times worse.

He never socialised with others during meal breaks...just did what was paid to do.

The strange thing was he drove to work in a current model Mercedes 300ce (I think), wore an expensive looking suit and carried a briefcase before getting into his overalls. Spent about an hour in the shower each afternoon to get all the crap off him.

He was definitely fooling someone (missus, girlfriend?) by putting on this facade and getting a shit wage for a menial task.

lots of people who migrate to Australia as professionals (from outside of Great Britain, the US or New Zealand) find themselves having to do menial jobs they are overqualified for because their qualifications aren't recognised here or similar nonsense. And it would be extremely embarrassing for them personally to be working jobs which they would think ought to be beneath them. Loved ones may or may not understand, but people in that situation are so personally embarrassed that they are mostly just fooling themselves (and can't face up to letting their loved ones know the ways in which they've fallen)

Well it's not nonsense ......Australia has some of the most stringent qualifications in the world and unfortunately leave some of the other "first world countries" for dead in comparison.

We also have highly qualified people with years of experience in their chosen field doing menial jobs because their qualifications and experience is regarded as being non existent as it was earned overseas, often in Middle Eastern or Asian countries.

Whilst a lack of English and the need to earn instant money preventing lengthy re-education can be a barriers - it's never as great a barrier as good old racism.

Rather than "your qualification don't mean shit here son" maybe a better approach would be "let's see what your skills are and give you assistance to obtain "transfer" qualifications that Australian companies recognise. It wouldn't be hard if the industry bodies here could be f**king bothered.

Racism? Because Australia keeps a certain standard? You do realise that while us racists are just sitting around conspiring to find more ways to be more racist, it's also used as a way to stop Australians from buying a cheap degree OS & then coming back. As you said, nothing stops these people from gaining recognised qualifications here, except themselves.

Racist. That's hands down the biggest bow I've seen drawn on here in a long time.

And upfront HECS payments.

HELP payments are available to those with a Visa. In much the same way it is available to anyone born here. My understanding from talking to Uni employees, both in academic & service related positions, is that it's no more difficult to acquire this either.

Haven't heard much to be honest. Someone I know who also knows him sent him a message on facebook and he said he was feeling better and trying to be more confident or something. Only problem is I also heard that the parents are treating him like an invalid who needs constant attention and care now and that probably won't really help get him up and going again.
