Club sacks drug player

November 13, 2004

CANBERRA RAIDERS centre Jason Bulgarelli's football career is in ruins after he was sacked yesterday for allegedly being the intended recipient of a package mailed to club offices at Bruce which contained the drug ecstasy.

Surprised ... Bulgarelli is maintaining is innocence.
The 28-year-old former Illawarra junior representative, who joined the Raiders in 2003 from Queensland Cup side Easts Tigers, still had a year to run on his contract.

Bulgarelli's agent David Riolo told The Weekend Australian last night: "Jason is innocent and will prove it by having his name cleared through the ACT court system. He also has the right to take the case to the NRL appeals tribunal.

"Jason also has the right to sue for wrongful dismissal."

Riolo said he had originally been informed by a senior Canberra club official by phone that a package addressed to a "James Brow" had arrived at Raiders HQ last Tuesday.

"I was then told somebody at the club opened the package, found some pills before sending it off to be independently tested," Riolo said.

"The club then informed me the result of the testing came back as meth-amphetamine.

"At first I didn't know what it was and was forced to look up the word on the internet that the stuff was ecstasy."

When contacted last night, Raiders chief executive Simon Hawkins confirmed the club had sacked Bulgarelli after intercepting a suspicious package.

"On club legal advice I can't comment other than to confirm Bulgarelli has had his contracted terminated which still had a year to run," Hawkins said.

"What I can also tell you is that the original allegation wasn't treated lightly and we thought long and hard before coming up with this decision."

Hawkins then referred all other inquiries to to ACT Police at Belconnen.

But when contacted, a senior Belconnen police spokesman said: "There is no person named Bulgarelli of interest to us."

Bulgarelli made his first-grade debut for the Raiders against Penrith in round 10, 2003 and played 37 games.'

Whatever happened to "innocent until proven guilty" ? Why sack him. Very un-professional to the Raiders. It'll burn your arse if he's innocent.

Just wondering.

Isn't it illegal to open mail that is not addressed to you.

Bulgarelli sacked over drug package

Canberra centre Jason Bulgarelli was sacked yesterday afternoon after club officials intercepted a package containing commercial quantities of ecstasy.

In a case that has cast a pall over the entire club, Bulgarelli may now also face criminal investigation. Last night ACT police were still looking into the matter. They had not yet interviewed Bulgarelli.

Bulgarelli has denied the package was his, and said it had not been sent to him. He has sought legal advice to contest his termination, which was officially for a breach of the club's code of conduct.

"Jason adamantly refutes the claims and the process of termination. The matter is now in the hands of Jason's legal representatives," his manager David Riolo said in a statement.

It is understood that circumstances surrounding Bulgarelli's sudden sacking occurred several months ago.

At that time, the club received a parcel addressed to a person unknown to it, James Brow, an allegedly fictitious name. The parcel obviously contained small items that rattled.

As part of the club's safety procedures, the police were called and they took the parcel away. They opened it and had the contents analysed.

In the meantime, shortly after handing over the package, a female club official claimed Bulgarelli approached Raiders staff seeking a parcel, quoting the name that had been on the parcel and saying he wanted to pick it up.

But Bulgarelli is understood to dispute the woman's version of events. He claims that he approached the woman seeking a jersey that had been sent to him that he was required to autograph. The case has been hanging over Bulgarelli since that time. The club informed him it would await the analysis before considering its actions.

The ACT police on Wednesday advised the Raiders that the parcel contained ecstasy tablets.

Bulgarelli was about to benefit from a large increase in his salary to more than $100,000, and there have been suggestions that his sacking, without any hearing at board level, has helped the club meet its salary cap requirements. Last night Raiders chief executive Simon Hawkins would not comment.

Bulgarelli, 28, was the club's rookie of the year in 2003. The former Illawarra junior representative joined the Raiders in 2003 and made his first-grade debut in May that year.

Raiders players say they knew nothing about the case and were informed via text messages on their phones about 4pm yesterday that Bulgarelli was leaving the club and they would be told the circumstances at training on Monday.

As said in both articles, this wasn't a decision the club made lightly. It happened a month ago and only now have they decided to sack him.

what do we know on this issue.

1. The package was addressed to 'Jason Bro' or 'James Brow' c/o Canberra Raiders. Ok, who is Jason Bro/Brow ? Officials are quick to link this to Bulgarelli, why ? Why could he not be for Jason Croker ? Oh that's right, after better investigation, 'Bro' and Bulgarelli start with the letter 'B'.

2. Canberra officials intercepted the parcel and opened it. As Kaz said, I was under the impression this was illegal. Maybe a studying lawyer would be able to clarify for us.

3. Jason Bulgarelli was sacked. Unfair dismissal is ringing loud from where I stand! This will get ugly.

4. Canberra players were informed via text message.

Hmm...

As others have said, innocent until proven guilty ? Where is the police report ? Rebecca 'No Idea' Wilson has also reported Canberra officials were none too happy to resign Boogs to a 2 years deal, could this be a reason for the sacking until hearing the guy's case ?

This case has holes all through it on the surface and I would only hope that the Raiders management have dotted every I, crossed every T as this could end up quite ugly and embarassing for a club seemingly going backwards.

Have a look at the SMH story posted earlier in this thread. A number of points you have quoted above conflict with what was reported there. We don't really know the "facts", all we have to go on is a few news reports, so its a bit difficult to draw too many conclusions.

A package of drugs addressed to "Jason Bro"... if that one bit is true it's pretty funny

Sounds like there's conflicting evidence from a month before linking him to the package versus his own evidence not linking him to the package. Raiders have done their own investigations and chose to go with one siet of the evidence. Time will tell if that evidence stands up, and whether it's been fair or unfair dismissal.

I have ONLY seen it reported that the package was addressed to "James Brow". "Jason Bro" seems to be the figment of the imagination of a poster on this thread.

it seems different people know different things. as greeneyed said, if you read the smh article, it contradicts some of the "facts" you "know".
