and how did you get that ?
Probably by getting though the foolproof chain link fence in front of the stand....that was wide open at the hill end.

Btw, this shot shows how close Carlaw Park is to town:

A top class stadium?

Yes, re-read what I said. If the money had gone there instead of a certain other stadium then it certainly would now be a top class RL stadium.

But, it would be tough to get grandstand seating on the side, where you can see the Caltex Petrol station (as it's very close to the road). Either way or the other, with redevelopment on the other 3 sides, I think you could get a capacity in the vicinity of 25-30,000.

Does anyone ever remember this game between Tonga and Samoa (don't know when this was, but it looks like Carlaw Park if the pictures posted previously are any indication to go by)? There appears to be quite a lot of ppl, for an international involving these sides. Too bad crowds like this (between sides like tonga and samoa) are never obtained

Tough to get decent grandstand seating anywhere.

The site footprint is tiny. Way smaller than Mt Smart, which is pretty compact anyway.

And where would you park 30,000 cars??? Especially with the public transport system in Auckland being absolute crap.

Those photos make Carlaw look like it's a postage stamp ground... imagine how close to the action you could get there!

sad sad times...i was a regular there as a kid with the family and had the pleasure of playing on both the main ground and the no.2 ground. best ground for footy. fond memories of watching the mighty roosters there and the huge crowds you would get for the old lion red cup club challenges when teams like addington and wainuiomata were strong. the semi finals and the grand finals were massive, would get the the main game and before the 2nd div games (remember the marist v hibiscus coast 2nd div game as being one of the best games, with brian mclennan at hb for hc). the top sides te atatu with all their kiwis, mt albert and northcote with the crazy fu'u brothers with a young gary freeman.

anyone have copies of any of the old auckland games...they use to televise them on tvone...i use to have heaps, but my old lady threw them out, s**tted

I was there - Pacific Cup Final. It was one of the best games I have been to and the atmosphere was fantastic.

I used to go to Carlaw most weekends with my Dad. I have some great memories:

Kiwis 18 Aussie 0 in 1985
Auckland teams defeating major international sides
Great club sides - Otahuhu,Northcote, Mt Albert,Richmond - various eras
Frank Tinatela's try in the Tusk Cup final - better than Eric Grothe Snr's try vs. Bulldogs

It was also the 1st major stadium in NZ to get floodlights - way before any of the RU grounds. You were so close to the ground you could feel the tackles.

Using the current NZRL criteria re playing for the Kiwis, you could be a contender to pull on the black and white jersey.
