Can't even sign a decent half or 5/8.

Souths. All they have are (distant) past glories!

Never heard of John Sutton heh. Obviously don't know much about the game. Enjoy the (current) wooden spoon.

So is Sutton the "next" Joey? The moment he's off contract, the Roosters will sign him from you.

The spoon isn't ours yet genius!

If John Sutton is such a fantastic player, why was your team throwing ludicrous sums at Braith Anasta and Matt Orford? I agree the Sutton is good, but the powers that be in your part of the world obviously don't see him as the man to lead you out of the doldrums...

BTW, Souths are the current wooden spooners. The wooden spoon, like the premiership, is decided at the end of the year. Newcastle are simply currently in last place.

Enjoy the current wooden spoon... and long may you retain it.

They will have to wait four years. Once again, enjoy the spoon

Sutton is only 20, hardly old enough to shoulder such responsibilty. If long means about 2 weeks then I guess youve won this battle

You hold onto that mate. At least we look like getting off the bottom of the ladder sometime in the next few years. Can't say the same for your mob.

Looks like Souths are already trying to replace him with Monahan. Obviously they hold him in high esteem!

Once again, we haven't got it yet!

You hope. ALL your hopes rest on an old and injury prone Johns, and you re-signed him for three years. Good luck, you will need plenty of it.

Souths are starting to do the right thing, rely more on their outstanding juniors - Newcastle are relying more on old crocks - let me see, what is the more successful recipe for success. Gee hard question that one.

If you don't have anything intelligent to say, do yourself a favour and keep your mouth shut. Sutton is a 5/8, Monoghan is a 1/2, you need BOTh in a team. Next?

Calvin - you act like its a bad thing that we have the best ever player guiding us around the park.

... and if you havent noticed, it is OUR JUNIORS that our team is built on - Joey, Bedsy, Simmo, Newton, Perry, Gidleyx2.... and you watch - the Names Mullen, Snowden and Brown are going to be prominent next year. Even Hinton should push for FG. Im not here to bag Souths, but how about extending us the same courtesy? I thought you guys (you are a Souths supporter, right?) would have a bit more compassion for a team struggling... are you just jealous that we are on the way up again while you sign Elford...?

Don't get me wrong, I would love the luxury of Joey steering us around. But Newcastle are virtually totally reliant upon him. As for being on the way up well, see my comment re Johns - talk about putting all your eggs in the one basket.

As for Elford, he would walk into your 3/4r's. If Johns can make a nuffy like Carmont look ok - what can he do with a decent player.

elford has been in good form lately i'll say that, so has george. newcastle rely on joey yes but were losing games when bederus was off the paddock early this year. newton has been the player lifting the knights, and johns will not leave the club clutching when it is time to hang the boots up. he spends a lot of his spare time with these young kids coming through. calling them up and asking them to come down the paddock to throw and kick the ball around. souths and newcastle are very similar, as we both have great breeding grounds. the unfortunate thing is that because of the salary cap, it means we spend a lot of money developing talent for other clubs like the roosters.

at full strength? hand off it mate. Barring injury we have Seage, Thaiday, Cooper, Gidley(x2 - assuming Mullen owns #6 as he should) Carmont, Tighe, Brown, Quinn, Hall, Salkeld - all fighting for backline spots. Elford would be rated above some of them, but not enough to be a first choice.

1. Seage
2. Cooper
3. Gidley
4. Kidley
5. Thaiday/Quinn

would all be infront of him... and Brown would take the utility bench spot. We dont need the 'old head' that seems to be his main attraction for you guys. Face it - even though you are ahead of us on the table atm, only John Sutton, Ashley Harrison and Fletch (2 of which are leaving) from Souths would make the Knights 17, and even then 2 of em would probably be on the bench. Both Doogs might make it too, but Mad Dog only plays a handfull of games every year anyways, and we don't want his primadonna arse back. We will take mad pup though - backline depth is always a good thing. Merger anyone.... ;-)

That's a coincidence - cos I would only take three from the Newcastle mob, and they are that obvious I won't even bother naming them.

Without those three you would not win a game. Hang on a minute isn't that just what happened. Fancy that.

.... and take those three out for you guys and see how you go.

if you wouldn't take Newton you have rocks in your head - has been near THE form backrower in the comp for the past 5-6 weeks.

All clubs (successful ones) have a player that without him they struggle. There was an article in a paper a couple of years back that pointed out the Roosters (without Fittler) and the Broncos (without Lockyer) actually performed worse than Newcastle without Johns. Now I will admit those stats will have changed since then but it goes to show how one player at a club can have such a dramatic effect when he's missing. You need go no further than the Roosters this season without Fittler to realise how much effect he had on them. When that player is your captain, playmaker, goalkicker, and prob orange boy as well, of course you struggle without him. The fact is that to be successful in the NRL you need a quality halfback, if you haven't got one then chances are you wont worry the engraver at the end of the year. Don't rubbish clubs for relying on their playmaker, that's what it's about my friend. We are not putting all the eggs in one basket, there is only so much you can do under the cap, Johns will be guiding the young up and comers in the junior ranks to one day take his place, they wont replace Johns, nobody will, because I doubt we will ever see a player that can change a team so dramatically, but don't rubbish us for having the guy here, I know who's shoes I'd rather be in if choosing between the club with Johns, and one with say your halfback of the future, and I do mean that in a nice way, I'm not tryng to be derogotory with that statement, it just gets tiresome when people rubbish the club for being a one man team. I mean are you going to rubbish NSW this year for having him in the side, are they a one man team?

Seem you silly lot a arguing over one of our Tigers discards in Elford. Elford has been playing great cnsistently footy this year - I dare say better than any of the Newcaslte centre's this season so our young Souths fan is pretty right in his assesment.

I also dont accept any substance in Newcastle's renewed enthusiasm in claiming that they wont be at the bottom of the table again next season. (whats changed?). Souths have, as good, if not a better chance of lifting from the bottom of the ladder than Newcastle.

They also have got a good young side at present they are developing whereas you guys sign old hacks like Davico and a drifter pommy winger who hasnt proven himself as an NRL player. Seems Carney is using your team for stopover to practice for 2007.

You all get excited in signing another hack in Joey to play untill he's 34 - if he doesnt injure himself in England. Sure he may be insured if he gets injured but the money will still count to the Salary Cap in 2006 2007 and 2008 if he is not on the field. How dumb are your managment for letting him do it? If he is as loyal and dedicated to Newcastle as he always pretends to be - he wouldnt have played State of Origin in 2005 then maybe you wouldnt be getting the spoon in 2005 with those two extra wins he costs youse. lol
