WESTS Tigers put Jason Cayless under the microscope physically before signing him to a two-year deal, chief executive Stephen Humphreys said yesterday.
"We offered him a deal only after receiving assurances from our own medical staff that his body could stand up to a return to the NRL," Humphreys said.
Cayless, 29, prematurely ended his contract with English Super League giants St Helens in mid-September after failing to recover from a shoulder injury.
The 194cm prop had also been plagued by a knee-ligament injury and, although he made 83 appearances for St Helens, he hadn't played since April.
He was a member of Saints' Challenge Cup-winning teams in 2006 and 2007 and was also a Super League grand final winner in 2006.
He won an NRL premiership ring as well with the Sydney Roosters in 2002.
A former Kiwi international, Cayless further strengthens the Tigers' forward pack. The club is still chasing Melbourne and current Kiwis prop Jeff Lima, but that now seems unlikely to happen.
"It is great to be back in Australia playing in the NRL competition with a club heading in the right direction such as the Wests Tigers," Cayless said in a statement yesterday.
"I can't wait to play with the likes of Benji Marshall, Robbie Farah, Gareth Ellis and the boys under Tim Sheens."
Sheens, the Australia coach, said Cayless was a quality signing for the club.
"Jason will add a lot of depth and experience to the pack and will provide invaluable leadership to the strong crop of exciting young forwards coming through," he said.
Cayless will now line up once again against older brother Nathan, the Parramatta captain.
Jason had three years at the Eels before joining the Roosters in 2002.
Meanwhile, Wests Tigers still remain hopeful of striking a deal with dual international Lote Tuqiri.
Tuqiri, 30, was sacked by the Australian Rugby Union in August and has offers rugby clubs in Europe and Japan.
But the Tigers believe they can convince him to return to the NRL.
