when was the last time anyone not named rangers or celtic won that league?

Never.

However, the SPL has only been in operation for 8 years.

Haha, sorry, but you're a mid table premiership team at best.

You keep thinking that...because when the day comes that Celtic go to the EPL they'll rule that too.

Hardly. Combine proceeds from ticket and merchandise sales (Celtic are close to the most sold football brand in the world, i'm led to believe) plus TV monies and you've got a fairly solid financial base from which to build on. Use this to buy a whole lot of decent players and after a couple of years in the EPL you have a potentially top 4 team. Look at Newcastle and the players they can buy (relative to say a Wigan or a Bolton) because of their gate reciepts and marketability.

The two horse race argument is quite ridiculous aswell. Read Juve/AC in Italy, Barca/Real in Spain (with Valencia = Hearts, possibly), PSV/Ajax in Holland, United/Arsenal in England (at least until Chelsea came along), Lyon in France.

non old firm teams to win the top flight in the last 100 years
apologies to third lanark fans!
Motherwell: 1932
Hibs: 1948, 1951, 1952
Aberdeen: 1955, 1980, 1984, 1985
Hearts: 1958, 1960
Dundee: 1962
Killy: 1965
Dundee Utd: 1983

so the answer is Aberdeen [circa A. Ferguson manager] in 1985

Celtic and the other mob have won 87 of the last 100 titles!

and off topic, but its great to see gretna get into the cup final
3rd flight team having a ripper year, probably a ground of no more than a few thousand?

probably inevitable that a team from gretna is going to be livi like or cally thistle like in future.

other teams in spain have always given the big 2 a run [basque, galician teams recently as well as valencia]
and lyon have only done the business this century, 35 years back st etienne
were the big bully of france soccer
holland has been a three way battle for 40 years [Feyenoord being the other]

portugal is the closest to scotland, bar 1 year-only 3 different teams have won every season since the late 40's

eventually celtic n rangers will go epl, they have massive multi million dollar turnovers, 50 000 crowds etc, everyone else struggles to get 8 to 10 000 to matches

spl= lame. it would die if celtic and rangers left, just die.

It would still be there but just as Bumble said coverage will decrease and probably players will try to get a spot for English clubs.
It would be a development league if those 2 left.

How predictable. Two pages of whingeing about Celtic and the SPL...

Given access to the same Sky money as the English teams and the lure to players of regular matches against the Uniteds, Liverpools and Arsenals and Celtic would challenge if not win the English league within a decade.

Celtic are a bigger club than the vast majority of EPL clubs in terms of supporters. Only United have a bigger ground in Britain.

Not for long, Arsenal's new stadium opens next season.
