What will be the reaction to the big crowd to the pres-season friendly or whatever at the central coast stadium?

HYUNDAI A-LEAGUE - NEWS

MARINERS EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN GORMAN THRILLED BY LOCAL SUPPORT

Sunday 31 July 2005

Central Coast Mariners Executive Chairman Lyall Gorman has reaffirmed his thoughts on the future of top flight football on the Central Coast in light of the Mariners outstanding results off the pitch at last nights Pre-Season Cup tie with Sydney FC.

8,362 spectators contributed to the carnival atmosphere at the Mariners’ picturesque bay side home, as the Mariners battled with their local rivals in an entertaining and enjoyable ninety minutes of high-octane football.

“Any doubts about the Hyundai A-League having a home on the Central Coast were dispelled last night,” said Mr. Gorman.

“Last nights attendance shows just how much this team means to this community and we know that it’s only going to get bigger and better from here.”

The Mariners gate was the best of any Hyundai A-League side in round two of the Pre-Season Cup.

Further to this, 8,362 is also a greater figure than the one announced at Central Coast Stadium on Wednesday night, when the NSW Waratahs hosted Auckland in a Rugby Union trial.

“This strong evidence of local support for the Mariners is encouraging for local investors and corporate sponsors within and outside the Central Coast community,” said Mr. Gorman.

“Including the midweek Rugby Union fixture, the Central Coast market has been asked to attend three matches within a week and they’ve responded amazingly.

“Last night, and previous matches at Central Coast Stadium, augur well for a fantastic start to our Hyundai A-League campaign on September 4, where we expect to see our crowd numbers swell even higher than they have so far.”

The Mariners first Hyundai A-League home match will take place on Fathers Day, September 4, when the Central Coast host northern rivals the Newcastle United Jets.

The central coast, looks like it has solved the problem of no NRL action by supporting the soccer.

meh

The NRL is NOT that stupid to ignore a man like John Singleton for too long. Trust me, the Bears WILL be back, and whatever the soccer community do, it will pale into insignificance once Singo has his own team in the premier comp, The NRL.

Souths and the Cowboys in round 25 will get 13,000 plus.

The central coast's own A league side will average 8,000 tops for the year.

If the A league gets 8000 i don't see what the difference was from the previous comp. Soccer is in a bad state when you average less than 10,000

Then soccer is in a permanently bad state in Oz.

Still, the NRL has well and truly ballsed up the people of the CC. Fair dinkum, Telstra treat the bush better.

If soccer takes off at Gosford, good luck to 'em.

I am a big football - 'soccer' fan and I also support the Mariners. I really want to see that A League take off, it would fantastic to have another domestic ball sport to follow in the summer besides cricket. I live in the ACT and we don't have a side so myself and at least 5 others are keen to make the 4 -5 hour drive to go watch them play every now and again. It won't affect League as they are being played at different times of the year.

I think it will be a success.

i think a lot of those 8000 will be sticky beaks just checking out this new A-League....as we get closer to summer I feel crowds will decline, but I may be wrong and they may start getting full houses.....still if they average 8000 for the season then I would be impressed as the last I heard the Northern Spirit were attracting crowds of around 500 to each home game.

It might not be long before John Singleton is in bed with the Mariners. All is not as rosy as it seems on the Central Coast.

The Sun Herald wrote a similar snippet on Sunday in regards to the mid week Rugby Union match, and suggested (again) the Central Coast could be taken over by the Super Doopers (where have I heard that before?).

As for the lack of action by the NRL:
28-May-2005 16,253 Easts v Canberra
10-Apr-2005 16,162 Souths v Newcastle
Plus Round 25 Souths V Cowboys

More clubs will be looking to stage NRL games at Gosford next season.

I see that most of the “A” League clubs including the Mariners are struggling to find the participation levy:

On another note, Michael Cockerill wrote a worrying article on crowd of about 1500 turning up at Newcastle, after it was heavily promoted.

For the fans of "The Artist Formerly Known As Soccer", Just a bit early to be be doing a war dance on the Rugby League Grave,

I don't think you will find many A League fans that actually think it will overtake League or AFL, you have to be realistic. I don't see why people need to turn it into a competition with League, as I said previously, the A League is going to be a Summer comp.

A strong comp here that can attract some decent players (even if it is a bit like the NRL/ESL with the EPL players coming to Australia to retire in the Sun) can only be great for Soccer in this country. Australia is one heck of a sporting nation but we lag behind in the World's most important sport. Even League fans who don't give a rats about Soccer should want to see it succeed, it will improve the National Team significantly.

Woodgers,

To me, that says the Central Coast will now support soccer on mass.

It's not so much the attraction of aging players coming here to finish there careers but the ability to hopefully keep our young talent here rather than have it go overseas at age 17/18 and play in the lower ranks of the English system or in the minor leagues of Europe.

If they get 8,000 to a Pre Season game I think they will get a deal more come August 29th. A few wins and they will average a few more than 8,000 I think. They will get about 10,000 to 11,000 I think as the season goes on.

Newcastle is a worry at present. Hopefully the Knights fans decide to get behind another Newcastle team.

singo owns 80% of the management rights to the stadium, so the mariners are paying him [and norths league who own the other 20%]. if they are in trouble he may lower the fee for ground usage

pretty sure singo is on the board of the A league [or the new governing body for the code in australia] with lowy n friends, if he gets 'involved' as you say he'll have to jump off the board, nah

agreed, but the CC mariners are in the only place in australia that is not competing against another national football code.

constant top flight soccer on the CC and only the occasional 'NQ or storm v sydney team wanting to suck up to the nrl' match will mean that soccer may conquer a rugby league market long term IF they [the mariners] suceed on field and the A league generally is done well and things like australia getting to germany in 06 for the World Cup

you quessed it: bring on the central coast bears and fight the round ball rubbish!

here we go again.

Simple, I live up here and believe me when i say this but NO one gives a flying sh*t about a Central Coast side NO ONE!!!!!!!!!!

You'll get dildos like Bob Fulton etc that say they do but believe me i have not heard the words " Central Coast Bears" by anyone since January last year!!!

About time people moves on, it will never work up here as people prefer the beach, Club Tropo, Iguana Joes, Terrigal night life & Erina Fair...and besides everyone up here already has their side of choice.

Get over it!!

I also was raised on the CC. I think they'll support a team... a CC team... and not some sydney team playing out of the CC.
