I heard someone interviewed recently, who made it clear there just wasn't the money out there for 3rd party sponsorships at the moment. I can't help but wonder if this is because the players are killing or have killed the goose that layed the golden egg with their numerous off field incidents over the last 4 or 5 years.

Our players do not have the media exposure/recognition nationally that a big multinational company wants. Toyota want their adds to go to a national audience and everyone sat in front of the telly go "oh look there's Billy Slater, geez if he drives a Toyota so should I!". AFL has the same problem hence why you don't see their players in many ads either. Only Cricket and RU (and probably soon soccer) has the level of national/international exposure of its players that make them attractive to big companies.

I'm in Melbourne and I don't think I've ever seen an add with a Union player in it. The main sport stars you see in national ads are Cricket players and Swimmers.

When I have kids I'm going to steer them towards playing basketball rather than league. I wanna be a rich dad FFS, like the Williams sisters' pops.
