Channel 10 must be sucking up to the NRL - its TV rights negotiation season!

Bugger me if Sports Tonight - the AFL's nightly infomercial on Channel 10 with a few other sports chucked in as a cover up - actually put a LEAGUE STORY ahead of the AFL news. Ok, they opened with some nuffy cricketer breaking up with his bimbo missus..... Still Their rundown on Round 1 preparations at Wests, Parra and Cronulla was above the usual AFL dirge.

C10 being nice before the TV rights battle begins?

Tequiri is still as dumb as dogsh*t though!

i doubt it

Ten Sydney news last night were promoting a story that will air tonight about how AFL was invented in Western Sydney so therefore it wasn't invading. They stated that "AFL was returning home"

Technically the Lara Bingle story that lead the news is about AFL, since it involves Fevola. So nup, still no NRL lead.

Saw that also, my wife actually laughed when she saw that story and to quote her after laughing:
"How desperate are they for stories the AFL"

They will be bidding for the rights next year. They are desperate for some league on One HD.

I saw that too el. That weedy looking guy they were interviewing saying it was comming home looked like an internet stalker. Probably over at Big Poofy now.

Ten still wages a war against league. All their comedy shows (Good News Week, 7PM Project, et cetera) all put rugby league down every opertunity they get, running the same old jokes about "boof heads" or "rapists". In their defence, the comedians are all Victorians (how you call Dave Hughes a comedian is beyond me though).

Just for those who are interested, AFL isn't from Sydney. The guy who wrote the original rules was born in Sydney, but grew up in Melbourne before going to the Rugby school in England, then came back to Melbourne and wrote something like 8 rules for AFL. No doubt Ch 10 will be having a circle jerk over it though.

Can't wait to see what it is this time.

A few weeks back we had this history lesson from Sheedy...

http://www.smh.com.au/afl/afl-news/...western-promise-for-sheedy-20100206-njrq.html

“This code is basically invented by a person who lived in the west of Sydney. Jock McHale, a legendary coach of our game, was born in Sydney. It’s got some history that a lot of people don’t realise. For me to come out here more than 100 years later, that’s exciting.”

...which turned out to be a kid born in Botany who moved to Melbourne when he was five. ["Sheedy Gilds The Lily About Western Sydney"]

As for Aust rules being invented in Sydney's west (which presumably ignores that the area beyond Parramatta in the 1850s was still largely bush), I've seen a few in the past argue along lines based on the code's founders Tom Wills (born at the Molonglo River, 180kms s/w of Sydney) or Colden Harrison (born at Picton) - both of which are hardly Sydney's west. Another angle relates to Wills' parents living & marrying in Sydney, including his mother spending much of her childhood at Parramatta.

None of which are defining connections that impute the influence of Sydney's (now) western suburbs on the birth and development of Australian rules.

You might as well argue that Bobby Fulton was a product of English rugby league because he was born in Warrington (but migrated to Aust when 4 y.o.).

Didn't see it but don't mind the story (if true) just for the 'piss off Victorians' value. They never like it when I tell my Melbourne mates that it's in fact an Irish game. I guess the story wasn't shown south of the border however.

Seeing you know your stuff you should watch it and make sure they're not breaching the code

I'd love Ten to get the rights. Given they have a dedicated sport channel it'd be far more likely to get replays and etc on One HD as you do with AFL.

!

That is because our comp is about to get underway - the AFL comp is still two weeks away. Things will change when their comp starts I can assure you. It will be the usual AFL saturation/love fest.

But I thought AFL was invented by the native Aboriginies?

What id like to see happen, is for the TV rights deal to include replays of past games. Not neccessarily the current seasons matches, but if so, great!.

The idea being, the commission sells the rights to say 9 and 7 plus Fox. We could then sell the rights to replays from yester-year to One HD. Now just to keep 9 and 7 happy, we could tell One HD that they cannot broadcast the game during primetime or against NRL matches on 9,7 and Fox.

With the evolution of digital TV, it would be nice to have "choose-day" night football on One HD (or any channel willing to pay for them)

My ultimate goal is to have some sort of Rugby League on all 3 FTA channels while at the same time getting as much money from the deals as possible.
