One word mate: "Foxtel"

Actually Foxtel are not televising the grand final until Monday morning.

We have to wait until 10.30 and if we dont want to know the score by then, we have to avoid all media because they will be quick to use the result as a news item.

Slightly off topic but there is a good possibility that Penrith will be taking a game down to adelaide next year courtesy of the Penrith stadium redevelopment.

It is also SANFL grand final here, which they gets a fair amount of coverage for a very B grade competition.

SANFL???

And AFL fans laugh at NRL supporters coz it's the National Rugby League comp with teams in only three states and one territory of Australia, yet here is a single state competition of their crap sport that call themselves the South Australian National Football League?!?!? :?

Does the Sunday Mail in Adelaide have any Grand Final coverage today????

Adelaide is the least tolerant of any city of anything that's not AFL.

Adelaide is so far up itself with parochialsm its not funny but the local media seems to cover other sports. There just seems to be a conspiracy or a grudge against Rugby League. It's no wonder considering Adelaide was given a local team in the Super League comp, only to lose them again. Now we are expecting them to generate an interest in a foreign (interstae) code. I beleive the answer lies in developing the local competition to give the locals a sense of ownership. Then the parochialism will work in our favour.

I have not read this weeks Sunday Mail. I did check last weeks and there was not one mention of Rugby League. However, there was a half page article on the local Rugby Union Grand final. In a way this was a positive for our code as well, because most locals don't even realise there is a difference.

South Australia already has a local league, the SARL.

Isn't exactly developed and doesn't get an awful lot of breaks by local folks or the ARL for that matter.

Had a couple of years pre Rams where it got reasonably strong, but those days left when the team here did from what I hear.

Is improving and getting kids involved, which is good for future though

Rugby is not the sport that is being discussed here. Rugby is Rugby Union.
That's not correct. Rugby is League or Union. Its the Union spin doctors who are trying to convince everyone they have the name 'Rugby' all locked up.. and they seem to have convinced a lot of League supporters as well.

It's only in interstate Australia where some AFL supporters don't know the difference between the two Rugby codes.

Quite frankly I think League should reclaim the name they used in promoting the first Rugby World Cup in 1954, a Rugby League tournament. The Union guys pinched the name!

In the UK and France its not unusual for League games to promoted as Rugby. In England's competition, the full name is the English Rugby Super League.

If need be, call it Union or League when making the differentition. But don't step back from calling the greatest game of all 'Rugby'. And don't hold back on pointing out that it is Rugby League, an improvement on the old Rugby Union.

Dream on. Rugby means the 15 a-side game, always has, and always will. If you want to differentiate your game, call it something else. Otherwise put up with the fact that in many more countries of the world than you would prefer, "rugby" means rugby.

If you become a national football code like AFL is, maybe oneday NRL can be shown / written in media forms all over Australia like AFL currently is.

Go to Russia and to a Rugby League match and call it Rugby League they wouldn't know what you're talking about.

In Russia the game is called Rugby13 and promoted as 13-a-side Rugby.

Rugby means union, league means league. It's not a matter of who owns the word, and certainly not an endorsement of union, it's a entrenched convention (has been for some time) in Australia to provide clarity.

It's only in interstate Australia where some AFL supporters don't know the difference between the two Rugby codes.
Exactly, so when they say Rugby what do they mean?

LOL. Didn't take much to draw them out.

In France RL has a similar name, Rugby XIII. It was the French who pushed for the World Cup after being shafted by the Nazi-backed Vichy regime in WW2, a collaboration which had the support of the Rugby Union.

Union pinched the RWC concept and name from Rugby League.

Dream on indeed.

Just what I said, they don't know the difference.

They are both Rugby codes but for those who don't follow either sport, they wouldn't bother looking past that.

When people say 'football' what do they mean?

That's right, what do they mean? This is why there are different names for each code, Aussie rules (or AFL as is becoming more popular), soccer, league and rugby.

I agree with you in principal. But plenty of soccer guys think they follow the only 'football' code, and the rest are spin-offs. This is despite the fact that early forms of what became football had players running with the 'ball' in hand, as well as kicking it.

Regarding you calling it 'league and rugby', the names are 'Rugby League' and 'Rugby Union'. If you're following modern convention that fine, but that would have to be used across the board and is open to future interpretations.

Well, that's pretty much how it is. The only times I've seen people use rugby to mean league is by outsiders who are unaware of the difference, or at least unaware that we consider them wholly separate and distinct sports.

Willow, you are 100% correct. We should not let the union types bully us and convince us that "rugby" is union. We should religiously call union "union" and not "rugby". Rugby union and Rugby league are the proper names. The media in Sydney are dopes and call the sports whatever the sporting bodies themselves nominate.... they instantly jumped to calling "soccer" "football", however, we should not let them do it. It is "soccer" in Australia and always will be.
