Charity Shield 2023 vs Souths

Massive holes in defence, especially on our line. Bloody embarrassing.

But the worst thing: at half time, I’m sure I saw the entire team really not wanting to listen to Hook, Hook himself looking lost, and some players who didn’t want to talk to each other. It really looks like a broken footy team to me.

IMO: Tyrell Sloane will never make his mark at fullback. Move him to Rav‘s wing. Lomax to fullback - at least he can catch and tackle - and he’s been a busted bicycle at centre for too long now. The forward pack needs massive surgery. Laurie, Sua, BMM, Liddle - OK. We‘re still not moving up in defence and yield post contact meters so easily. we have no momentum in either attack or defence. The lack of spirit is painfully obvious.

It's early days, I'd give Sloan more time but if he doesn't work out it wouldn't hurt to trial Lomax at the back, like you say he can catch a ball and he can tackle, he'll need some proper coaching though for the positional aspect of playing fullback. Either that or try Matt Feagai or sign up a professional fb from somewhere.

Just wanted to remind people: It's the charity shield for peats sake. If our preseason performances last year were any indication of how we'd travel, we would have been top 8, easily, but we weren't. Some of you honestly need to calm down a bit.
Agree wholeheartedly.

Early days.

many individual errors in defence today.

If nothing else, Hook has had a major reality check that should help him make some serious decisions on team selection.

Mbye is a great utility. Unfortunately he is not a great 1 or 6.

We should give Sloan at least 8-10 first grade starts. He is not the problem. He is part of the solution.

Rava is either down on confidence or done.

Musgrave went well. BMM went well. Lawrie had a crack. Liddle played exceeded my expectations. Sua played his heart out.

I would give the Molo brothers game time.

Hunt/Sullivan/Fegai went well.

Lomax was ordinary today but unsure what we can expect when the forwards are dominated. Suli made some poor reads in defence, but he is a weapon in attack. Burns is an ordinary/mediocre defender.

JDB & Bird will strengthen the side.

Couchman, Egan should be fast tracked to first grade. We need their speed and effort.

Lots of work to do before the Titans game.

The Coaching staff are going to have many sleepless nights.

Just calling it as I see it. We will definitely not be playing semi finals football again this season. We just don't have the go forward and our defensive structures are poor. 12th at best

How can the Dragons players have pride in the Big Red V jumper when the poor buggers so rarely get to play in it? This game - another stupid meaningless variation!
The problem I think was that for TV viewers, you couldn't have 2 REDV teams playing on the same day as the viewers would be confused hahaha! The Pommy REDV did the trick and deservedly so. The Panthers met their match as we did a week ago.

I feel sorry for sloan. If it's any consolation for sloan chrichton had a shocker at the back tonight with handling errors and he's a more established player. He shouldn't be so hard on himself as he had some good touches.
Has Chrichton already signed with the Bulldogs for 2024? If so, good luck to them as they intend playing him at fullback. He was the one who knocked the ball on in Golden Point tonight gifting the Red V Saints great field position for Dodd to kick the winning field goal. Ha!

Agree. Mbye is number 14 and should never be first choice 6.
I think Sloan should be tried at this stage of his career at wing. This will help him to build his confidence and get better in defence (Possibly in place of Rava). He was very emotional at the end and was being consoled by Kerr and then by Mitchell. The club should look after his well being. For FB I thought Treigh went ok last week. If he is not the answer, the club should try Lomax or Feagai or try to get somebody from Super League or Union.
I think Sullivan played very well should be half and Hunt should move to 5/8. One of our tries came when Hunt was second receiver. Club should also think about a second half or five eight. We will be short when Hunt is called on state of origin duties.
We leaked several tries through the middle. The middle forwards need a lot of work in defence. JDB coming back should also help as he is a tacking machine.
I thought Liddle went ok. One of his runs resulted in a try.

Overall the tem was less than ordinary. Remember our best game last year was against South.

thoroughly disgusted in our application today, showed no heart, we scored tries when the rabbits put the cue in the rack, for those of you who said we have a soft draw early think again, same old sane old in defence, if hasler is not the clubs main priority, then they are kidding themselves, the writing is on the wall for hook, he will start as the most under pressure coach for sure after that performance, i feel sorry for sloan but you can only comment on what we see, it is only a trial but it still was embarrassing to watch.

We might just remember Sloan wanted out because he thought he was such a good player and wasnt getting what he wanted at the Dragons. Well i hope he thinks long and hard after today about what a good player looks like and start showing the faith the club had in him.Catching a ball isnt rocket science, but if you cant even do that , then you have no future.
Wow what a way to start the year-2 dismal losses.I know its only trials but other teams seem to be ready to go and were not. Ive renewed like i always do , but this is looking even worse than last year.

Was out in the yard clearing old trees and bushes so didn’t see the game. And to be honest I didn’t give a second thought about the game until I jumped online to see what happened. That’s a fair indicator of how disillusioned I am with the board‘s decision to retain Griffin this year. Had zero interest in watching a poorly coached rabble run around and it sounds like that’s exactly how they played. I predicted during the off season we would be wooden spoon contenders in ‘23.
Remember the days when we mockingly called the Charity Shield ”South Sydney’s Grand Final“? Now we’re just a training run for the opposition.
