Classic finals matches - not including grand finals

OK - time for one of those "Post your best memory" threads. The topic - what are the most memorable qualifying, semi or preliminary finals games you can recall?

From memory, the best I can recall - for different reasons - were (in no particular order)

The "Rip Thirdman's Head Off" Semi - Brisbane v Melbourne - Lang Park 2008.

The "Helmrich" Semi - Parramatta v Canterbury - SFS 1998

The "Dummy Spit" Semi - Newcastle v Easts - SFS 2000

"Heather's Last Stand" - Brisbane vs St George Illawarra - Lang Park, 2011

The "Meli Mauling" - New Zealand v Canterbury - SFS 2003

The "Cowboys Cometh" Semi - North Queensland v Brisbane - Dairy Farmers 2005

The "Loltzen" Semi - New Zealand v Wests, ANZ, 2011

The "Hayne Train" semi - St George Illawarra vs Parramatta - Kogarah 2009

The "Bradbury" Semi - Wests vs St George Illawarra - SFS 2005

The "Flattened Patton" Semi - Parramatta v Canterbury - ANZ 2009

The "Sleeping Soreboard" Semi - Manly v Easts 2013

Or others?

the "Benji Blew it Brace" 2010 v Saints kicked out on the full - Soward kicks winning field goal next set - 2011 v Warriors - run it on the last. Warriors score winning try next set.

You'll be missed Benji.

By opposition teams in big games.

That was also the "Hodges - best Broncos fullback in a finals ever" Semi - the latest emerging premiership winner of all time I believe.

Knights vs Sea Eagles Week 1 2006 was a good'un. Don't have a clever name for it though, maybe "Joey's Final Seage". Although that will go over the heads of most non-Knights fans.

Our reward for winning that match was playing the Broncos at Suncorp :?. I think the new finals system is definitely better.

Also surprised no mention yet of "Manu Magic" - Warriors v Melbourne 2008. One of the great finals boilovers.

EDIT: beaten to it.

First two that came to mind was Brisbane's comeback against Canterbury in 2006 when Lockyer ran riot in the second half and tore the Bulldogs apart.

And the second was the Tigers/Roosters final which was probably the best game of league I've ever watched. Had it all and then some.

Well I'm gonna do my favourites, so there's gonna be a lot of St George Illawarra.

1998 preliminary Dogs def. Eels.
Paul Carige....

1999 Dragons def. Roosters semi -
That's the year I started officially supporting them. Nathan Brown scoring the winning try in front of a huge Dragon Army cemented my love for them. A love which I would regret, 2 weeks later.......

2000 preliminary Roosters def. Knights -
I was at the game & was directly in line with Fittler's intercept. I think Johns' saliva hit my face when he threw his mouth guard to the ground.

2003 preliminary Roosters def. Bulldogs -
The Bulldogs were talking about so much about being 'wobbed' of a premiership in 2002. Loved the look on their fans faces after they got beat by the 'pretenders'.

2004 semi Cowboys def. Broncos.
Nth Qlds first ever victory over Brisbane. Cowboys looking good for the first time in their history. You could feel the atmosphere threw the TV. A fiiting club to end Tallis' career.

2005 preliminary Tigers def. Dragons.
Was at the game. It stills hurts. Didn't speak for days afterwards.

2005 preliminary Cowboys def. Eels.
The word choke is the most overused world in this forum, & it shows very little understanding of sport. But yeah.... that game was a choke. The main thing I remember is Tim Smith doing a cross field kick inside his own 30, about 10 minutes in. You knew they were gone at that point.

2006 preliminary Brisbane def. Bulldogs.
One of the most important comebacks in the games history. In that 2nd half Brisbane looked like they had been struck by lighting, I've never seen anything like it. It made funnier afterwards hearing about Mason's mouthing off at half time.

2008 qualifying final Manly def. Dragons.
Other then Manly smashing us, Gaz scored a great try & I thought it was the last time I'd see Gaz play for us. May or may not have cried......

2008 semi Storm def. Broncos.
Ashton Sims...... That's all that needs to be said really lol. Lockyer's complete & utter devastation. I don't think I've felt worse for a player.

2009 preliminary Eels def. Bulldogs.
All aboard the Haynetrain. 74,000 fans. Was a beautiful sight.

2010 qualifying final Roosters def. Tigers.
That game just kempt going...... Dwyers hit on Maria. The intercept by SKD.

2010 preliminary Dragons def. Tigers.
This is my all-time favourite sporting match. So much hype. All week all the talk was about the 2005 prelim, & the choker taunts were heavy on this forum. Dragons having the come from behind to win. In the final 15 minutes Tigers were throwing all sorts of things at us, but Soward just kept our composure & kicked to the corners, rather than go for a half arsed field-goal. Marshall's kick out on the full. The perfect pass from Fien for Soward's perfect 38m field-goal. I've never been more nervous in that final set of six. When Galloway made that break, the noise was deafening. Boyd picked up the Ryan grubber & chucked the ball out, & sheer joy realizing we won it. The siren was the best thing I ever heard. We won the premiership in that game.

2011 semi Warriors def. Tigers.
This is without a doubt, the most obvious attempt by referee to get a team over the line I have seen. Every 50/50 call went Tigers way, & some of the penalties against NZ were ridiculous. Marshall running it on the last with a few minutes to go. Mateo's try was the most ungodly try in history. It was sweet justice. The haka in the crowd. Farah crying. 'twas great.

2011 semi Broncos def. Dragons.
I was very proud to be a Dragon fan on this night, despite the loss. Brisbane were all over us, & we didn't get out of our half for the first 20 minutes, but we thought back & went to golden point. Then Lockyer performed his last heroics for Brisbane with the field-goal with a broken jaw, & ended Saints hopes of back-to-back premierships.

2011 preliminary Warriors def. Storm.
NZs forwards dominated Melbournes. Storm wanted to win so bad after being stripped of their premierships. Bellamy's devastation, & Smith's "I don't know what to say - I can't believe we lost...." line was fun to watch.

The "Flattened Patton" Semi - Parramatta v Canterbury - ANZ 2009

Outside of GF wins, this is my favourite game of RL hands down. And you've nailed it with the name. As soon as Patton was laid out the crowd went nuts.

Next best was beating the crap of the Bears in '98.

As a fan who's only seen his team play in 5 finals games, my favourites would have to be our only victories in those years, Souths vs Raiders in 2012 elimination final and last weeks qualifying final against the Storm.
