Dragons boss Peter Doust breaks silence on Shane Flanagan, board disunity and more

Looks like everyone is on the same page and all is well. So systems are a go and I'm keen to see what develops from here and I hope that all the drama with Hunt dies down and we can start saying things on a more positive light about the future.

A tiny little thing but listen to how he says 'we' when referring to the Dragons team and their results through the year when in fact he was actually working for Sea Eagles. Just a word but also shows how invested he is already, by my comprehension of it at least. He's become a Dragon. Hook was the coach of the Dragons. A subtle difference but huge in effect.

Sure, we could have really done with a Bellamy or Cleary to come save us but we got a desperate man instead. Desperate for a chance but also desperate for success which he has proven he can get. No matter what, there's no way we can go anywhere but forward with Flanagan as coach. His demeanour comes off as hungry for success to me with some smarts about him.

When the early losses come I will be interested to see how he owns up to it and more importantly, hold the offending players accountable. Our boys need discipline.
I have a feeling that there won't be early losses. Flanno will have then fit and fitness has been the main problem over the last few seasons. With Lomax at fullback and Sloan's improved defense making the left wing his own, the Dragons will look a ,icj different team in 2024.

I would not trust what Teflon Doust says publicly.
I reckon there was no doubt he did not want Flanno originally and tried to kibosh it.
Of course he is on board now..but he is sharpening the knives as we speak just in case
Agreed. Just posting the title of the article. He’s a cockroach, he always finds a way to survive. Hopefully he is at least staying out of Flannos way like he did with Bennett.

“I have to design a program which suits the type of athletes that we’ve got,” he said.

“At the Sharks, we were tough. Paul Gallen was a ruthless, tough, warrior. I don’t have that player in my team, so I have to design a program that suits us. We will out-compete teams. I want to be fitter, faster and stronger. I expect to play semi-finals next year. People outside this room will think I’m crazy but it is achievable”

Bennet designed a game plan around the strengths of the players he had and got them to play well enough to win a title [with a few extras to plug the gaps]. Hoping that Flanno has similar success

Yep. It is no good wishing for a team full of SOO players. Flanno has to get the Dragons playing a style of football that suits the skills and capabilities of the cattle he has. I really hope he is excellent at devising appropriate styles of play!

Agreed OED. I'm sure that is what he's thinking.

If he can at least get them to play smarter and just get those dumb error out of our game then that will go a long way to accruing more wins...

Wish I could believe you. I see absolutely no reason for Young to be here, especially after his efforts with the Cowboys. One successful year in his entire tenure as defence coach and he's yet again parachuted into us like he's the second coming. After being here for majority of the McGregor era Inc a stint as caretaker and we know what happened there.

He's applied for the HC role twice. And he's going to be happy just as a "senior assistant"?

Absurd.

Much of the talk in the room before the formalities began centred around the actions of skipper Ben Hunt. Flanagan danced around the issue when host Lara Pitt asked him about the future of the No.7, who has repeatedly stated his desire to leave the club to return home to Queensland.

Flanagan’s forthright response – which this masthead has chosen not to publish to respect the confidentiality requested by the club for access to the inner sanctum – highlighted to those in the room why the Dragons have placed so much faith in him to bring success back to the club.

I was actually present for the lunch so I can tell you what Flanagan said: he said that Ben Hunt is a big sooky baby who shits his pants when the weather gets too cold. Literally, he wears a nappy. The Westpac CEO laughed so hard at this that Dom Perignon started seeping out of his nose - and they hadn't even served champagne! But Ryan Webb assured him that it was absolutely true. Crazy stuff

I figured that whatever he said wasn’t complimentary. I think Flanno is playing the long game on this one and is intending to maximise whatever we get in return whenever he lets the Chunt go. If what you are saying is true, and I’d like to see a verification of this, I’m liking the cut of Flanno’s jib.

with respect, I'd say don't worry about the tea leaves and board driven conspiracy plots to bring back Dean Young. Flanno is on the record as saying he drove the appointment. Yes... he is cut from the Dragons cloth, no doubt has relationships but is that always a bad thing? He played under Bennett and was at the club when we went to the top. Yeh he has not exactly shot the lights out at the Cows but I would argue they are a stronger club than when he joined. It's tough to attribute success and failure to assistants - we see that time and time again that it's not an exact science. If we get to the point where Flanno is sacked... by the current logic... he too would be connected to that failure.

Personally - I think that Flanno knows this is his shot at coaching redemption and is looking well beyond his 3 year term. I wouldn't bake in another forehead wrinkle overthinking Deano's involvement in the coaching staff but hey - free country!

The desire of the Board to appoint Young as our NEXT head coach is fueled by the two worst administrators and faction bosses in the Club: Craig Young and Peter Doust. We will never rid ourselves of these self-interested backroom deals until these two men are off St George Illawaraa and St George Leagues Club Boards.
