Coach Flanno

"He's definitely an [option] at fullback but, even if he doesn't start at fullback, the training at fullback is going to give him a lot of the skill set that I'm trying to get him to play as a centre.
"He's a super talented athlete, we just need to challenge him
."

Flanno on Zac Lomax. He never mentioned that Zac needs to be given some clean ball at centre, so instead of usually finding himself with three hungry tacklers in front of him, he can see clear space to then use his footwork skills.

I think Flanno has no choice but to talk positively about Sloan.. Nothing good would come from trashing him.

He does point out that he has flaws that flanno needs to fix.. So once again a difficult question answered well.. If sloan continues to not improve those flaws, then the situation changes for his future.

If you hear "we are sick of losing" from the senior players and the younger players just get dropped, it's pretty sad.

I think the club has let the players down in regard to communication and coaching. I hope Shane is challenging them, getting some pride back in their performances with some clear direction.

To be honest, he said we can't beat everyone however, he won't let the players down and from what he's said, he will get the best out of them.

I am reading that Flanno views Tyrell Sloan as a long term Dragon.

''He's a super talent, but he's got some flaws and I need to address the flaws. It's predominantly around resilience and defensive systems and structures. If we can get him up to speed in that area, which I think we can, he'll be an NRL superstar."
I love how he’s not afraid to question publicly his resilience & defensive issues.
Puts the ball squarely back into Sloans court.

Just my opinion BG but this storyline that Lomax gets no good ball is because he never really beats a defender. He may step him but due to lack of pace gets gobbled up quickly. Strong sure and yes a good footballer but getting the contract of a lifetime so good luck to him.

Lomax is not too bad I suppose but I wish he had the skills of Mark Gasnier.

I'm reserving my opinion on a few players until the end of season 2024. the main reason for doing this is that I have great faith in the new coach and his fitness staff.

I hold the view that the Dragons will be much fitter in 2024 and because of this, will be much more capable next season.

Both Gazzas had great forward packs that provided platforms for attacking flair.
Yes, you are right there Mojo.

When we had Bennett, our forwards were great. They weren't massively built but they had strength and endurance and smarts and in the 50's-60's of course they were brilliant.

I hope Flanagan can get the correct formula of forwards and backs like we had. I might be wishing and hoping too much and don't want Flanagan to feel any of the pressures without a ball being kicked so far as what he has in front of him is a massive job. I'm so glad it is him and not Jason Ryles.

Me too. I reckon Ryles would have been a disaster - but, who knows?
I think we can get some strength and go-forward from our pack (a couple of young monsters would help but, give it time). Then our backline, properly coached, given some space, will be a different ball-game.

Good post BG. I have heard ‘give him clean ball, give him early ball, play him on right side, hasn’t been coached properly etc. The bottom line is that Zac isn’t quick enough / lacks the dash of top centres like Mitchell, Staggs, Crithon, Best, to name a few.

Yet, Zac is tough, athletic and moves well. Good front on tackler, has an offload and able to run a good line. I’d like to see him back row or lock. His frame could carry another 5 kg. Maybe, a sort of Isiah Yeo.

I think Flanagan will be looking to young Fifita and Tuitavake to give our pack a real boost.
Fifita is definitely a big body, while Tuitavake is more built closer to the ground, but still fairly solid.
If either or both take their opportunities in the pre season games, this will be a big plus in giving us that much needed go forward up the middle.
Interesting to note that so far Flanagan has not come out in the press putting any pressure on the unknown names in our squad, even more so those on our T&T list.

Plan A, Flanno comes good with the few players coming before Christmas.
Plan B, Flanno a proper coach, motivates players and seeing what he can do with the squad that are already here.

Getting everyone on the same page is going to be a huge job and if he can do that, bye bye bottom four and put some pride back in the joint.
