The reason that there WAS a heap of AFL/VFL - NRL/NSWRL mascot name crossover, is because (for the most part) when the clubs were christened, the game was still fairly amateur.
Now that there is a whole level of professionalism to sport, a clubs' team name, nickname, mascot has to stand apart from others, and established [professional] clubs have every right to protect their brand.
The Redcliffe Dolphins - Gold Coast Dolphins is case in point.
Most new teams have to come up with new nicknames.
The Australian gridiron team wanted to name themselves the Cyclones, but that was already taken by the Australian Cycling team who refused to share. (They settled on Australian Outback in case you wondered)
I'm sure when the Brisbane Bombers succumb to Essendon's outrage, they'll settle for the Kookaburras and then run into trouble again with Hockey Australia.
