Comparing Mascot Names

The reason that there WAS a heap of AFL/VFL - NRL/NSWRL mascot name crossover, is because (for the most part) when the clubs were christened, the game was still fairly amateur.

Now that there is a whole level of professionalism to sport, a clubs' team name, nickname, mascot has to stand apart from others, and established [professional] clubs have every right to protect their brand.

The Redcliffe Dolphins - Gold Coast Dolphins is case in point.

Most new teams have to come up with new nicknames.
The Australian gridiron team wanted to name themselves the Cyclones, but that was already taken by the Australian Cycling team who refused to share. (They settled on Australian Outback in case you wondered)

I'm sure when the Brisbane Bombers succumb to Essendon's outrage, they'll settle for the Kookaburras and then run into trouble again with Hockey Australia.

Brisbane Bushfires

Those crossovers (Tigers, Bulldogs, Magpies) date back decades, well before either competition tried to go national. The fact is it's 2011, and both the AFL and NRL are national competitions operating in a national sporting landscape.

There's no way they'll (Essendon) be successful in any lawsuit (they can't own the name to a type of aircraft ffs), but I think that's besides the point. It's just plain stupid in 2011 to use an existing brand name from the same country.

Also, of all the AFL names to use, why choose the one that sounds like 'Bummers'? Brisbane Bummers will just roll off the tongue of opposition supporters from day dot. They've made it too easy for us.

wikipedia  Do you use wikipedia for your assignments as well? How about this wikpedia link "However it is contested by fans of the day that the rooster was associated with the football club decades earlier. This claim is strengthened by newspapers in the 1930s depicting photos of a rooster-top weather vane pointing eastward when publishing articles on the Sydney Roosters. The explanation given being that Eastern Suburbs being in the east, is where the sun would rise hence where the rooster would crow first."

Didn't want to add the rest of the paragraph?
