Complaint of racial abuse in Roosters v Broncos

I suppose you can't read Spencer's mind, but if he's telling the truth and his comment wasn't intended to be racist, then I don't really see why he's being suspended for racism? Different story if it was intended to be racist.
Come on now.....I think you'd have to be living under a rock to think that calling a dark skinned person a monkey is not racist in any way.
As I've said before, even if we are to believe Leniu, he would have received a fair education about it over the past week. Ignorance should not be an excuse for acting like an ass.

I think 8 weeks is too long. I agree with Kent and Anasta that 4 to 6 weeks would have been sufficient. The only good to come out of this whole mess is that it's showed that racism isn't taken likely in the game. I just hope that if it happens again that there's consistency in the punishment.

I get what theyre saying but Kent came out and challenged the others, that said it was a light punishment, and explain why it wasnt enough. Yet I dont think he explained why it was too harsh.

As far as I know Thurston is the only one, so far, that says its too light and shouldve received more matches. There maybe others that I havent heard or we may hear from more former players addressing this issue.

I was expecting 4-6 weeks myself but I cant really say if its harsh or fair. I hope players can learn from it but who knows.

It'll be interesting to see what the NRL does if we come across another harsh comment on the field.

MKCS missed one - A sex offender got 7 weeks last year.

Spencer got 8, Some still say it is unders.

I wouldn't allow any criminals in the game but the game seems to be harsher on words, then actual crimes
Dylan Brown’s suspension was ridiculously light. He should have been gone for the season. At a minimum.

Interesting that Fox reported it. I dont know if anyone else noticed it but during the ad break in 360 yesterday after they were discussing this issue they showed a trailer of the new movie "Monkey Man".

I used to referee until 2022 in in junior rugby league in Western Sydney and I can assure who "monkey", "black c", "the n word", "coconut" was used frequently between African Polynesian and aboriginal players, players will shake hands after the game and continue like nothing happend. So I totally agree with Spencer not thinking it's offensive as these words were uttered all the time.

I vividly remember a Sudanese winger called aboriginal halves pairing "effin monkeys to their face and nothing came about it so people here saying Spencer must of known it was racist not aware of the environment he lived in what are the norms. Look at what Olkau'atu said today.

Junior Rugby League? Geez how old were they? You'd get sent off for saying "bl00dy hell" when I was playing.

Would calling a white skinned person a monkey be racist?

He got 8 because that's the minimum they could give that would see him missing the game in Brisbane.

I have absolutely no evidence of this and predicted it cynically but I'm going with it.

He got the same time as Mitch Pearce got for pretending to f**k a dog.

How does everyone resolve that in their minds?
Why do we have to compare to other instances, with judiciary members who were not a part of both processes?

If 8 is right, 8 is right. It doesn't matter whether Mitchell Pearce got whatever for dog handling, or John Hopoate got whatever, etc.

8 weeks is a long time. I think islanders get treated worse when getting sentenced. It was nice comments from the Olokau-au in support of the young fella.
Yeah great comments, he was unaware monkey was a derogatory term. With an IQ like this, I'm surprised he manages to get his pants on. So fellow Samoans call each other coconuts, so what? I call my best mate a dumb merkin, and it's in humour. I call someone that who's not my mate, he's going to take offense.

I'd also suggest being called a coconut is derogatory, but it's not quite the same as being compared to another species. Coconuts grow on trees in Pacific islands. Monkeys are a species that pick at their own skin and swing from trees. What these simpletons don't understand (and it's not their fault, they're young) is that whenever slurs are used, it weighs Indigenous people down. When they are called racist terms like monkey, it solidifies their status as second-class citizens in some people's eyes. It holds an entire group of people back from the equality as citizens, that they deserve. Dumb f**k comments like Leniu's deserved to be punished severely and made very public, so they are not repeated.

Seriously, WHY ARE WE THIS DUMB? People want to accept Leniu doesn't know the impact of calling someone a monkey? If so, why did he call him it? I'll answer that - because he's a dumb f**ker, he was hot-headed in the moment and wanted to cause offense/get a reaction. He knew EXACTLY what he was doing.

And at the end of it all, I knew my perspective on this was right when I saw Paul Kent disagreed. f**k me, why does that arsehole get to have any level of influence on anything. Woeful human being.

Some Comments here on this issue are either just plain stupid or trolling. 8 weeks was sufficient in my view although 10 to 12 wouldn’t have disappointed.

I thought 8 was harsh. I was in the 4-6 camp, but whatever.

The more I think about it, the more I can completely conceive of a world in which Leniu did not know about the racial connotation. But I don’t think that this can be used as an excuse.

Without gaslighting, I’d like to know what was said to Leniu in the lead up (and what Ezra Mam wanted redacted from the public)

I grew up in nz.

As I said earlier, when the Symonds/Singh thing happened, I had no idea that ‘monkey’ had a racist connotation.

The Goodes saga, I know minimum about, as AFL doesn’t exist in my world (which is nice)

I doubt Leniu is a keen follower of Test cricket or AFL.

But yeah, “I didn’t use that racist term racially” is not a defence that can be accepted.

Agree with your post but what influence does Pau Kent have?

Coconut in FNQ is derogatory as it means brown on the outside but white on the inside. Is that what we're talking about or is there some other meaning?

Fairish point, but calm down.
