1. That guy from my team is innocent. Or if he’s guilty it’s because he used to play for that other team.
2. That guy who doesn’t play for my team is guilty.
3. That guy who used to play for my team is guilty because he’s been corrupted by his new team.
4. That guy who plays for the team that beat my team in a controversial grand final a few years ago is guilty as hell. Throw the book at him.

Without gaslighting, I’d like to know what was said to Leniu in the lead up (and what Ezra Mam wanted redacted from the public)

I think that Ezra wanted to keep his comments about the racism that he has experienced private.

I grew up in nz.

As I said earlier, when the Symonds/Singh thing happened, I had no idea that ‘monkey’ had a racist connotation.

The Goodes saga, I know minimum about, as AFL doesn’t exist in my world (which is nice)

I doubt Leniu is a keen follower of Test cricket or AFL.

But yeah, “I didn’t use that racist term racially” is not a defence that can be accepted.
Really? What part of NZ did you grow up in? Monkey always had a racist connotation when I grew up in HB in the 80s, it just wasn't frequently used, but we all knew it was racist.

Anyway, I think he's copping a Vegas loading, I reckon he would have got 4 weeks, 6 max if it happened in Oz.

Edit: In saying that I hadn't really heard of the term ranga growing up, I think it's more an Oz term, we used ginga (pronounced like sing, not ginger) for the red heads.

hard to know, but that’s probably not the most likely explanation, is it?

edit- just noticed @Apey’s reply.

i assumed that it was unflattering context in the lead up to the comment

It's funny that most of the people on SM saying o 'toughen up' and 'back in my day' get triggered by some rainbows.
We shouldn't be totally surprised but the general response to this on social media is pretty awful.

1. Ezra is a crybaby/a girl/should toughen up
2. The sports gone soft/bring back the 80s
3. Strawman, victim-blaming nonsense about Ezra saying something first being referred to as fact despite there being literally zero evidence suggesting that occurred.

South Auckland.

I guess, to your experience, is the point. People can grow up at the same time and have completely different understandings.

As I said, ignorance can’t be used as an excuse.

@Matua i guess we weren’t exposed to enough people who would use the term.

The public part of his statement described the incident. The last 8 paragraphs were redacted. Seems pretty obvious the last 8 were about the impact it had on him that he didn't want to be made public. Jeez, I wonder why?

Ezra is a very proud and honest man - he's been pushing for change since he was a kid, so I think he would have gone into great detail. IMO it was powerful to leave these words for Spencer only.

Here is Ezra front page of the CM in 2008.

I thought over time, people have gradually been better when it comes to these sort of issues. Last week hit home for me that a very large proportion of the country have not changed an ioata regarding ignorant views of the past. It has been a disappointing week.
