Seems like a scattering of this accross some other threads so think it needs its own.

I can see the merits of this and I would be willing to give it a go on one condition.

That is the GF doesn’t consist of 1 conf vs the other each year. You can’t rule out those kinds of scenarios.

To resolve that is easy by creating a finals series of the top 4 from each where the current top 8 system takes over. This ensures anyone in the top 8 can meet on GF day.

Would require a rank system to identify 1-8 but that’s easy too.

Shit part is manly 2 times each year.

Dont like it. Would rather play everyone once and some twice (in a completely randomly generated draw).

So what it is now?

Much prefer to have dragons, eels , dogs and south’s guaranteed at home than Melbourne, nth qld, titans and warriors, especially with a new club next door. $$$$

competitive team easily gets 13000 home crowd with that set up

Yep, what it is now. I doubt we will ever have big crowds regardless of who we play outside of one or two obvious teams.

I dont like the idea of 2 more teams.

As it is there are a lot of players running around who are not first grade standard.

Where do another 34 plus reserves come from?

Yep do it. But needs to be a system where the grand final can be played between two teams from the same conference. Maybe a longer finals system could sort that.

Also, last place should play off in a 200 minute slogfest of shitness. Crowd can throw tomatos at the loser.

Really? Why?
Never really have and can’t see that changing. There’ll be the odd game or two that’ll sell out or close to it. Maybe if the ground was upgraded but that’s not happening.

Yeah also this. Probably only enough quality players for 14 teams if we are being honest.

With how much everyone complains in NRL I can't see this ever getting off the ground. Especially if one year the top 6 teams were in the Sydney conference for example. The media would kill it and it would be back to normal by seasons end. Look at the carry on about how fast the game is now.

So. i think a Sydney vs National Conference....

I have drawn a long bow, however
you'll have 5 ..6 years of the 9 v 9. Then, with the new TV deal and too many teams in Sydney, they'll cherry pick Souths, The Roosters, Parramatta and have a 12 team super league.
the rest will be left to die.

its what SL always wanted

Brisbane 1
Brisbane 2
GC
NQ
CBR
NEW
NZ 1
NZ 2
MEL
SYD 1
SYD 2
SYD 3

BUT
probably not. this is the NRL and the Sydney clubs have hung on forever. the sharks, somehow remain.

So if you go a conference system...
2 conferences is dumb with 187 clubs because you play 16+9 which is 25 games. IMO, there should be a few less NRL games.

you want three divisions of conferences of 6 teams. that way you have 10 home and away in conference and 12 home or away out. that just alternates each season. 22 games.

The winners of each conference make the top 3 finals positions and get a ..cash prize. the top 8 winning records across the three conferences get into the finals.

Then you can have stand alone Test, Origin weekends and not have those dumb weeks where half the teams play and they have half the players out

Agree. Need to keep the GF as best 2 reams rather than best of each conference.

The last place team after the 200 minute sligfest of shitless needs to fight wild beasts to the death as in Roman times. Nothing like a strong incentive

1 year you play your conference twice, the rest once, then the next year you play your conference once and the rest twice. There’s plenty of rivalries that exist between teams that wouldn’t be in the same conference, so switching it every year would keep it interesting.

I can understand the benefit of the proposed finals system, but I still hate it. You’d have guaranteed local rivalries in qualifying and semi finals, but then never in GF. And the fact that if the 2 best teams that year are in the same conference they cannot meet in the GF is terrible. That is by far the biggest issue in my opinion.

I’d also HATE it if we end up having to look at 2 seperate conference standings. I love the ladder. Dont take me ladder!

Someone said something similar on the main forum, but if the comp finished as it is now and was split in 2 conferences, top4 from each into the finals then the Titans, Raiders and Warriors would all make the finals with worse records that the Dragons who would miss out

Sydney
Penrith 14
Parramatta 12
Souths 12
Easts 10
St.George Illawarra 8
Manly 6
Cronulla 4
Wests Tigers 2
Canterbury 2

Non Sydney
Melbourne 10
Gold Coast 6
Canberra 6
NZ Warriors 6
Newcastle 6
Nth Qld 6
Brisbane 2

I can see the benefits but the negatives WAY out way the positives. Some sort of conference system purely for scheduling but the finals system as it is now is perfect

Frenzy.

Are the TV boffins going to be happy with a home and away conference system of 9 teams each meaning that will be 8 games away and 8 at home for each team meaning only 16 games. How are they filling the season up? Is it going to be that plus another round versus the other conference to make 25 rounds?

I don't think there is need to worry about this in the immediate future as it's going to be years off.

I think you could potentially make the finals longer if you wanted to rejig the whole thing.

Its happening now.

You play some twice and others once. It just isnt classified into those 2 groups.
The conferences need to change every year - the sydney comp would take most of the media and all the interest.
Sydney media drives the comp as it is and that conference would be a hark back to pre-90s and tribalism would go through the roof which is great for that conference.
Games like warriors V Cowboys would generate a paragraph 6 pages in from the back

Gus had an interesting tweak on it it.

The two conference system but each has their own top 5 and their own grand finals.

Then the winners of the two grand finals play each other.

That is a more interesting concept to me.

If they're using a different finals system I think they should retain a single ladder and take the top 8 teams regardless of what conference they're in.
