1. St. George

6. Souths

1. Broncos - The Biggest Losers

After a great Centenary season and a massive unforseen blowout in the Grand Final we arrive at the start of 2009 and WOW, What a of season.
Some of the biggest resent winner on the park have lost out huge of the park.

Without question the biggest winner for the start of 2009 has to be St. George.
Luring Wayne Bennett away from the Broncos has to be the biggest thing in Rugby League since Beetson pulled on a Parra jersey and Jack Gibson managed that eels team around the park.
Saints gains have to be a great advantage as well with the likes of Jeremy Smith from the storm, Boyd, Weyman.Costigan had a cracker of a world cup and has played under Bennett. Priddis another Bennett foot soldier gets to play under the his favourite general - again.

While

The Biggest Losers have to be the Broncos with the first new coach in 21 years.
It’s the disappearing troops that are also of concern. Stagg, Hannant, Ennis, Kemp Boyd, EASTWOOD,
Carroll and young gun Moon. The list is endless.

Canterbury are BIG winners with a BUT at the end. Stagg, Ennis and Hannant all played close together at the Broncos. Hodgson over his broken leg, Morris coming of a great season is a great buy and their other big gain also coming of a great season is Kimmorley, the nucleus of a great squad.
But - Kevin Moore, can he coach this team like they need to be coached???

The Melbourne Storm are the next biggest off season losers. Folau, Smith, Crocker, Geyer, Kaufusi and
others all gone, that’s got to sting big time. Butthey will be in amongst it in 09 - no doubt.

3rd on the go forward list is definitely Cronulla. Tupou - potential buy of the season. Maitua, out to prove a BIG point. Hughes, will do any and everything. Which leads me to Barrett, again, with a point to prove.
He can and will do everything for Stuart.Coming of a successful time in England and out of the St. George shadow he should shine brightly in the Sharks No. 6 jersey.

Canberra didn’t fair so well in the off season - A. Loosing Neil Henry B. Loosing Weyman C. Costigan.
They will feel the pinch as they operate without Carney, Hinchliffe and Withers. Topping with it all as David Furner tries to Coach the Raiders side.

A big positive to come out of the off season came to the boys up at Townsville in the body of Neil Henry. What he brings to the Cowboys is priceless. Then there’s their new ground assult to add to their astablished team. Tonga will no doubt be great, he may even earn his kangaroo jersey back. Rod Jensen, as good a footballer as anyone could want to be.Kaufusi, say no more. Paulson, young and once coached by Henry, he will go places - as will the 09 Cowboys.

4th biggest loser is Penrith nothing good came in the of season to the Panthers - yet they needed it.
They lost Puletua a great go forward guy, Wesser, full of positive thoughts and skills, Rooney, at his best a true state and kangaroo player.Their greatest lose will be Priddis, Penriths field general. Without him they will be fodder for whoever wants to have a shot at them.
Meanwhile Matt Elliott, with his head in that noose get closer to his final day. Dead man walking.

Warriors did Okay out of things, scoring a pair of Broncos in Kemp and Moon and a stray Cowboy in Lillyman. Stacey Jones (out of retirement) can only be good for things, no matter how they use him. I’m sure
Mr. Wiki (to us) won’t be far away. They are my wild card for 09.

Knights are only the 5th worst losers only because of the pain the other teams are feeling. No Buderus says a lot to the Knights and add Bailey to that mix and with no real new player to add to their roster Smith will have his work cut out for himself in this up and coming season.

Souths managed to pull a few logs out of the fire. Wesser will provide sould defence at the back while proving he’s lost nothing in attack. Colin Best knows where the try line is no matter who he plays for. With The experience Kane Cleal will do well under Taylor as will Mundine who’ll be a regular in their 1st’s team.

The Tigers will no doubt fell at life without Breet Hodgson will be difficult.
Though The UK’s Gareth is in the squad, he will struggle will the week in week out grind of NRL life.

Parra - New coach. New attitude. That will do them the world of good. They lost Riddell and Wagon, but their past their best. Why they let Williams get away is anyones guess. But that’s Parra.

The Roosters missed the spare chair when the music stopped, loosing Tupou will bite hard, Roberts will also be missed along with Shillington. Freedy know’s what his doing - I Think.

At the end of the day the Titans landed in the same spot, gaining and loosing some solid 1st graders.

Finally, Manly, again loosing a few champions in Bell and the BEAVER, as well as Williamson and Robson.
Yet they gained Tony Williams form their old foe in the eels and Chris Bailey from the hapless knights.
Dessie does know what his doing, he always did.

As for the winners of the comp

In Any order

St. George
Melbourne
Manly
Nth Queensland
Cronulla - Will have their best chance on paper anyway
Canterbury - If Moore can actually Coach

Outsiders

Roosters
Titans
Parramatta
Souths - with big Gordy there who knows

Then the rest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

writing off the warriors, raiders, knights and even the broncos?

most of the players you mentioned for the raiders didn't play much in 08, certainly not at the back end of the season when we hit some form. The one player who was on fire for us you didn't even mention is Colin Best. NFI!

Just Isaac De Gois who has been labeled one of the best hookers in the NRL.

PAPUA New Guinea World Cup flyer David Mead has knocked back a Roosters poaching raid to pen a two-year extension with the Titans. Mead is one of a trio of emerging Gold Coast flyers to extend their contracts with the club until 2011 alongside Tongan World Cup winger Esi Tonga and 2008 Toyota Cup tryscoring whiz Kevin Gordon. Mead, who has changed his surname from Moore over the off-season to recognise his aunty's family who raised him in Lismore, shot to prominence with his feats for the Kumuls at last year's RLWC.
He turned down a deal worth more than $100,000 per season, brokered through assistant coach and PNG mentor Adrian Lam, to remain at the Titans on a new two-year deal worth substantially less.

MELBOURNE has become the fourth NRL club to sack Arana Taumata in as many years, announcing the league bad boy's departure. A talented five-eighth, Taumata was released from the club following a "physical altercation with another male" in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Teammates Will Chambers, Dane Nielsen and Wairangi Koopu were also present at the scene, with the former two heavily sanctioned, according to a club statement.
Taumata, 20, had already been marched by Brisbane in 2006 and the Sydney Roosters in 2007 for discipline breaches and the Bulldogs last year after he allegedly broke another man's jaw in an off-field incident.
He was thought to be settling in well at Melbourne, with coach Craig Bellamy impressed by his pre-season efforts and considering promoting him to a play-making role to allow super-star Greg Inglis to move to the centres.

The Newcastle Knights are proud to announce veteran centre, Adam MacDougall has agreed to terms to wear the blue and red again in 2009.

MacDougall will resume training with his Newcastle team mates tomorrow morning after accepting a two year deal late this evening.

“It’s a fantastic outcome for the club,” said CEO, Steve Burraston.

Preparations for the Knights 2009 NRL campaign will continue tomorrow morning at the Newcastle University sporting fields with MacDougall’s familiar face back in the line up.

French player Julien Rinaldi has signed with Manly's feeder club Sunshine Coast Eagles.

http://qrl.com.au/display.php?pg_id=4416

THE Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles today announced the signing of current French international Julien Rinaldi.

Rinaldi will join a growing list of local and import players who will boost the fortunes of NRL affiliate the Manly Sea Eagles (pictured).

“This is a great signing for the club in so many ways and typifies the opportunity we have on offer at the club,” Sea Eagles CEO Brett Winkler said.

“Julien obviously fell in love with the coast when he trained here for the World Cup this year and his partner is Australian so there are obvious connections but Julien is still chasing an NRL berth and sees the Sunshine Coast as his best opportunity to get there.”

Rinaldi shares some history with the Manly club as their current CEO Grant Mayer was the CEO at French club Catalans in the UK Super League where he played.

After the initial launch into the UK Super League, Catalans has proved to be a second home for many Australian players.

“It is fantastic to be part of this new club and I see the great opportunities it offers to all players,” Rinaldi said.

“It is very similar to Catalans when it kicked off there and I think it is an equally sensational part of the world to live in. I am looking forward to my time here as a player and hopefully a long term resident.

“I fell in love with the Sunshine Coast when we trained here last year for the World Cup and always wanted to come back to live and play footy. Now it is a reality.”

Rinaldi will commence training tonight with the Caloundra RSL Sea Eagles in the lead up to their series of trials starting with Easts Tigers at Langlands Park on February 14, Norths Devils at Stockland Park on February 21 and culminating with the clash against the Balmain Tigers on February 28 as part of Footy Fest at Stockland Park.

Really strong signing. Will add to the already excellent cover at Manly in the halves and hooking departments.
