Putting aside his contract value for a moment - but noting that 500/600k for an Origin/Kangaroos player in a spine position is a steal, but anyway.

How do they fit him in the cap? Oates has departed and some other fringe player, they have a lot of good young players who want and deserve upgrades as they see more NRL... for example a big upgrade for Walsh. Where the **** is the cap space coming from? I shouldn't concern myself with these things though as I'm fully aware of how thoroughly the salary cap auditors/NRL will scrutinise this signing.

IIRC, Walsh was a contract extension, as was Mam's. Consequently the pay increase likely won't start until 2026.

Ehhhh I look at that 2023 grand final side and since then they've lost Farnworth, Flegler and Kurt Capewell who are all representative players. Brisbane will be very dangerous if they can get their best 17 on the field at some point. Haas, Walsh, Carrigan, Riki, Cobbo, Staggs, Mam, Reynolds and now Hunt.

Has to be the most dangerous spine in the comp.

The NRL. Will ask them about it and Brisbane will simply refuse to answer like they did with Andrew Gee and the NRL will shrug and do nothing about it.

Yeah, they replaced those players for season 2024, when they left. Young and talented players that get a payrise simply because they've joined the NRL team full time. All the players have managers who consistently agitate to have their player compensated for their ability and output. If a young bloke on minimum wage hits the NRL they cannot be left on minimum wage otherwise they crack the shits and leave to another club that will pay them more.

From what I have seen they lost Oates (a very quick google search says he was on 350k in 2024) and replaced his position in the 30 with a bloke on (allegedly) 600k. The second player released is Tristan Sailor who would have been one of those minimum wage players and will be replaced by a minimum wage player.

They've had Willison cement a first grade spot... payrise.

They've had Mozer establish himself. Piakura. Ma'am was probably due for a payrise. These payrises may not come into effect immediately but like you've pointed out they have a formidable spine and strike players everywhere.

It seems like the only club that regularly (recently) loses elite players due directly to salary cap pressure is the Panthers. Most other clubs just accumulate them and turnover the lower paid players.

This should be getting more media attention than it is.

The NRL according to reports set his value at $900k. I guess Brisbane can argue that no one else wanted him so that isn't his market value but I feel certain both Dogs/Roosters would have went harder at $600k.

Yes and no. Ever since the "notional value" stuff started coming up I always thought it was complete bull's manure as a concept. One day it will cost a player a contract and they may just sue the NRL over it as a restraint of trade. That's one of the few times I think any player would have a reasonable chance in court viz-a-viz the salary cap.
