Brisbane have snared a bargain.

The club’s newest recruit, David Mead, has cost them less than $150,000 for 2017.

It’s a saving of more than half of what Mead was earning at the Titans with his deal in 2016 believed to be worth around $330,000 a season.

By agreeing to just a one-year contract, it has kept the door ajar for the 27-year-old to pursue lucrative options in rugby overseas.

Nice work by the Broncos and good on David Mead, too. I'm sure it'll pay off for him!

okay so TPA rorts to continue, got it.
I'm not sure it's 100% that.
There is prestige associated with playing for the Broncos and Wayne Bennett and I think that their agents would spin that to the max.
10 years is the longest they've gone without a premiership, I think that for most S/E Qld produced players that is a big carrot dangler.
It's the same to a lesser extent with the Storm and I think the Cows are able to do it too.....NSW...not sure but it doesn't seem to happen as much.

yes fine but is $150K + Prestige + dedicated wing position > closer to $330K + preferred fullback position for Mead?

Cost of property would have a big bearing on it too.

Buy a shit box in Sydney for $1 million, get a bloody palace in Brisbane for the same.

Yet another advantage that is not quantified in a salary cap structure.

Heres an idea, introduce a Sydney allowance to cater for the cost of living

If that was introduced by the Roosters or Dogs, then Toddy Boy would consider it

It's not an even playing field and all the time the Broncos can continue to sign players belowtheir real value, nothing will change. I dont expect the NRL under Greenberg to do anything notionally positive, he remains a disappointment as a leader

The cheats re-signed three more players that lots of clubs would be after today.
You mean 3 players out of the Broncos development system that have played less than ten nrl matches between them...fmd anything for a whinge. Nrl clubs re-sign their own players all the time and no one bats an eye lid.

This cuts both ways though. ..it's attractive for Sydney based players to move between clubs in sydney and not worry about relocation costs and up rooting family. ..how many big names leave Sydney unless their in some sort of shit storm and they're escaping media spotlight. Not many players pack up stumps unless they're a fringe player after an opportunity or on a last chance.

We have an advantage because of Sydney's bullshit housing market now too.

Dipshit, I worked for a major Aust company 15 years ago and workers in Sydney doing EXACTLY the same job got paid more due to higher cost of living ie. Housing.. It's not a new concept and completely relevant.

If you think its not an advantage, you are simpler than first thought.
