Alot of good points on here. I think there's a time and place for a 4 year deal, but those are for the elite, the ones you know that will always perform and you'll get value for money.

The Sharks had way too many 4 year deals.

I'm a fan of the one year deals with a club option, gives the club the ability to look around and move them on, or if they're performing keep them.

I think the staggering off players contracts is important too. We'd be in a pickle if we wanted to keep all these players.
4 year deals are for players who
1. Entering their prime
2. Professional attitude
3. Key position
4. Demonstrate leadership potential
5. A player to build a team around

I suspect that Moyza and Dugan got 4 years to get the deal done and the Flange was prepared to take the risk due to losing Bird and Maloney.

I’d be doing 2 year deals with club/ player options on year 3, say we offer up and coming player $400k for 2 years with a club option of year 3 at $500k or player option at $200k so gives everyone involved an out, if they end up a dud we get stuck on year 3 at a lower cost and the player still gets some security or the player turns out to be a star they don’t get robbed of a decent deal In Year 3 but the club still holds onto a player without getting into paying overs.
Also be talking % of salary cap not in $$ that way if there is a mass increase in cap size players deals go up and they don’t miss out on increases makes the player more comfortable in signing a deal.

Yeah I like that 2 plus one idea.

It just hasn’t seemed to work for any club the long term deals.. the game changes too much year to year to lock a player in for so long. look at what the Cows have done with the big T, he looked like a world killer and now.. and I think they signed Paris for four or more years at big coin.
It ruins clubs.
Even, admittedly the best player I have seen, Cam Smith was on year to year , throw in the odd boat or two.

It is really the Chad thing that got me thinking this, essentially he was signed for 5 years. It’s just insane.

I’d be 4 year deals to guys like Munster and pappy. Maybe teddy a year ago. Players of that caliber.
Proven winners. Guys like ponga can play, but gee he misses a lot of footy, so I’d be reluctant

Sort of tangential but I have a story to share on this. I work for NSW Health and the way it has always been is if you recruit a Health worker into a permanent role it is forever. This is how government departments get stuck with poor employees. There is clearly not the same big money involved but the principle here is parallel

In my particularly corner of Health we have made a recent decision to only recruit to 12 month temporary positions or casual positions so there is a get out at the end for the organisation.

Not just Health, most part of NSW gov. I’m the beneficiary of those 12 fixed terms or contracts.

The flip side is paying somewhere around 1.75-2 times the going rate for the perm role.

Sure I’m only there for a short period and I can be moved on, or quit myself, quickly, but I’m making some serious bank as result.

same would apply with the club, it’ll cost to shorten up the deals, at least for the smart managers and quality players.

I’m only talking about say Toby.... WK.... Talakai and Tracey. The rest can go year to year except maybe SJ if he comes back well.
Well you will loose Katoa,Williams,Wilton, Mualtino ,Ramien and BB, they are all good enough and young enough to want a longer contract.

For me it all started with the DCE deal.

Next thing you’ve got Milf and Ben Hunt on $1m for fairly long periods. Then Taumololo gets his deal. The entire landscape shifted with that one deal.

And look at those clubs now,

The smart clubs don’t get caught up in that circus and focus on development and recruiting the odd player here and there at sensible figures.

Sorry mate I was just referring to the guys in the squad that are off contract at the end of this year..... all those guys are contracted for ‘22 and beyond. Agree BB needs to be extended beyond ‘22 though.

Yeah think a lot of the clubs panicked when the salary cap started rising significantly.... us too to a lesser extent with Duges and Moyza etc.

Yeah, that’s a good point. It was about that time heh.
The game has progressed so much, gotten so much more difficult to maintain at a high rate over time.
