Look no further than how Widdop and the team played without Benjii last season. I know I lost patience with him after the second game vs the Shonkies. It's my opinion that Benji is far better but I just find it astonishing how Widdop can seemingly do no wrong. "THAT" kick and that game are perfect examples. Widdop was good while Benji was great until the grubs took him out yet that game has been used time and again to demonstrate how good Widdop is.

The 2 best backs by some margin last season, Benji and Dugan, get denounced if they have a hair out of place.

Regardless, if the Dragons were to pick up Cronk, Elgey, Brooks or Taylor, I think the club should and will let Widdop go to accommodate them. Unlike a lot of homies on this forum, Mary obviously has a high opinion of Benji as he asked him to be captain at some stage last season.

We will soon see. Halfway or so into next season, we should start hearing about Widdop being offered a contract extension or not. Or at least, a contract extension with a hefty pay-cut or not. The club is already on record about offering Benji a one year extension, isn't it? Curious that will make him and Widdop off contract at the same time. If I were a gambler I would bet the club is preparing to get rid of one of them and is using next season to see who it should be.

Without getting into another fruitless Benji vs Widdop argument - its been noted that the club are already working on a contract extension for Widdop, as well as Dugan, despite both contracts having 2 years to run.

And Mary offering Benji captaincy doesnt count for much, he had Widdop as VC for a big chunk of the year and the back end of last year, so it's a strange argument to make.

As i stated before let Benji play some games first see how he pulls up before extending.

If he plays well and stays as fit as he can then yes give him a year if not let him go and look at other options.

Widdop is a given you extend his deal without question and Dugan if he is moved to the centres which seems likely you just re-arrange his contract to suit.

On Elgey he is better them both Brooks and Moses and i wonder how long he'll stick with the Titans before he gets the shits with the way the club is run and walks.

Really? Well I have seen it rumored on here but that's it. We will see soon enough.

ST GEORGE Illawarra stars Josh Dugan and Gareth Widdop are set to begin talks with the club about turning their existing contracts into long-term deals.
NSW representative Dugan and English international Widdop are both contracted until the end of the 2017 season, but their agent, Paul Sutton, tells RLW he recently contacted Dragons management about the possibility of extending.
The club was naturally keen to talk and it is anticipated negotiations will get underway by early in the new year.
Dugan has sometimes talked about a desire to perhaps try to follow in Jarryd Hayne?s footsteps and break into the NFL, but RLW understands that unless it was an easier, more guaranteed path than the one trod by Hayne he is unlikely to want to risk trading his NRL career in on a big gamble.
There were also rumours circulating earlier in the year regarding Widdop and a desire to move back to England and take up a contract with a Super League franchise.
But those suggested were refuted by Widdop last April.

You can be certain Widdop's management is keen to get a new deal sorted out ASAP. Unless he improves dramatically on last season, he won't be offered anywhere near as much as he is surely on. At least not as % of the salary cap.

Judging by this, if an extension isn't signed early next season, we will know he is to be shown the door. If I'm wrong homies can rejoice and say I was wrong.

Just as I was wrong to start denouncing supercoach Price early in his second season:sarcasm:, much to the chagrin of the majority of homies posting on here.

But of course I'm merely saying is that the club won't get rid of Benji if it's a choice between the two. Not that Widdop will be forced out.

I'll rejoice when you are shown the door. Your anti-Widdop tirades are mind numbingly boring! All disguised as been logical and rational. I'm not fooled!

I don't have a contract with the club. How will I be shown the door? My arguments against Widdop are logical and rational if he is indeed on the money I image he is.

I'm not fooled!

Could have fooled me:sarcasm:

Widdops current contract is peanuts at 450k, especially when you consider players like mybe are now on 600k. Val, if you honestly think that widdop is not worth 450k a year, I think you need to change your brand of vodka.

I think based on last season, 450k is a little excessive but reasonable. That is pretty much standard for an experienced, "workman-like" half these days. Barba and Hopoate were/are on about double that. Where do you get the info that is how much he is on?

BTW I drink "Green Mark" vodka. Real Russian vodka. If you have a better idea I would be delighted to hear your suggestion. Just don't say "Smirnoff", FFS!

Zero Tackle website has Widdop's salary as $550,000, which I seem to remember was quoted when he signed.

Good player. Worth the money. Should be captain seeing as Creagh won't be starting.

Agree whole heartedly.

Creagh still offers heaps but it's easier if the skip is an 80 minute player. Based on what's been said about Creagh's mental toughness in the preseason, I think he can be just as valuable as a kind of spiritual leader. Someone who helps the others rise to the occasion.

Not sure how to do links but ...

The Aquis Gold Coast Titans and emerging halfback Kane Elgey were dealt a shocking New Year setback on Monday when the club’s 2015 rookie of the year suffered a serious knee injury in the first training session of 2016.

Elgey went down with what was first thought was a minor knee injury after an innocuous incident during a training drill. It was the team's first session on the field since returning from a two-week break.

However, results of an MRI scan late on Monday revealed the local product, 10 days short of his 22nd birthday, has suffered a ruptured ACL and is resigned to missing the entire season.

"It's a devastating blow for Kane and he has naturally taken it hard," said Aquis Titans head coach Neil Henry.

"He showed his immense promise during his rookie season in 2015 and had been training extremely well, always among the leading group, and shown what great strides he had taken in confidence and maturity."

Widdop, on the open market, is worth more than 450k. As others have posted, he is probably on closer to 550k. Zero tackle has some info in relation to player contracts.

As for vodka, try Zyr or Putinka.
