Corona Virus and NRL Games

What’s been made abundantly clear the last few weeks now that the financial position of the NRL and the clubs have been somewhat exposed has been the total mismanagement of cash for a number of years.

Clearly, a $9.8 million salary cap and the massive grants to the clubs for a game that averages 13-15k crowds was never going to be sustainable.

Not sure what the game will look like when this is all said and done but expecting 750k per year salary and above for 20 something athletes barely out of school is going to be a thing of the past.

I fully agree. Pay cuts will be on the cards and future salaries to be in the $500K to $600K range for top players and nowhere near the $1m mark for a long time. A totally different structure will be in place from 2021 onwards is how I see things. Even sponsorship amounts could be much less and the number of teams reduced say to 12 to make things viable. That is if in fact we have rugby league games anymore.

It is just amazing that in all of the years that the NRL has been running, there is no back-up or significant monies in the kitty for a rainy day. I think that as this has occurred, the NRL will bring in "compulsory savings" by all clubs or a float to help pay for things like this.

All jokes aside, if an idiot with no background in coaching skills can steal 800K in year in salary, is it any wonder the game will go broke.

The only bigger idiot than McGregor is Brian Johnston who extended the idiots contract, with no KPI's written in ............. thats grounds for immediate termination.

Because the clubs have been raping the game for years. Case in point, the Panthers were paying 3 coaches last year, and sacked a coach that had his team in the top 4 the year before. Just because they felt like it. The Seibold and Bennett debacle, how much did that cost each club? Just an insane waste of money.

Players like Fifita and Pangai are looking for a million per year and they are barely out of school.

Ludicrous when you come to think of it given how little money the clubs actually generate themselves, with many running at a loss.

If there is anything good to come out of this mess, it will bring some sanity back to player salaries and club spending.

This is how I see it Giboz71 and I think will be for the good of the game in the future.

I just thought. JMoz just jumped ship and joined the Roosters today and as the mocka would have it, the league has been suspended and he will have to wait indefinitely to start in a game for the cock a doodle dos!!
