So, if the NRL only has approx. 3 months of cash left on them and this "temporary suspension" could well and truly last for several months, is it R.I.P to the NRL?

If it is, they only have themselves to blame for all the exorbitant spending that has occurred among the game's top administrators since the 2013-17 and 2018-22 tv deals combined are worth over $2 billion.

To only have approx $50-80 million in cash reserves after 8 years (since the so-called independent commission was formed) is a joke.

The AFL is more or less in a similar basket, their assets won't get them far either if broadcast money dries up.

No code is immune here, if this ends up wiping out 2020 altogether, then all the elite sport institutions in our country - much less worldwide, will be looking different. Assigning blame to anyone will be largely pointless.

So you might say, but had $50 million/year been put away as Gary Pemberton suggested back in 2012, the whole scenario would've been different with that extra $400-450 million (plus interest, considering interest rates were still high during the early years of ARLC) and the NRL wouldn't have found themselves panicking over the past few weeks where V'landy publicly begged the government for funding etc. That was a very bad look.

This is the icing on the cake, in a long list of administrative cock-ups that have been happening in the game for years. Very good product, excellent tv ratings (especially Origin), but extremely poorly run by the men at the top. So much potential, but never fulfilled.

So....AFL is doing "mass stand downs of staff" according to the SMH.

But I thought they had a war chest and could fight this forever. Or are they only paying players? Or playing with themselves about their grandeur?!
Column a, column b. I am pretty sure they have a similar warchest to the NRL, only something like 70m. They are definately not home free

Gus ran a club during this time. Did he insist on putting money away?

I could care less about VFL but they piss away 30 mil a year on a women's comp that makes nothing. They would do with that dosh now.
