FORMER rugby league star, Craig Field, allegedly 'king hit' a man last night leaving him in a critical condition on life support in northern NSW.

Field, a 39-year-old veteran of 183 first grade rugby league games in Australia, was arrested overnight for allegedly punching 51-year-man local Kelvin Kane outside the Kingscliff Beach Hotel about 9.15pm.

The blow knocked the victim to the ground and he was unconscious when paramedics arrived at the scene.

CPR was performed on the man and he was rushed to Tweed Heads Hospital.

He remains in a critical condition on life support.

A second man, aged 41, was also arrested and taken to Tweed Heads police station.

Both men are assisting officers with their investigation.

Police are yet to determine what caused the incident, but it’s alleged an argument erupted out the back of the pub before the punch was thrown.

Mr Field is a Kingscliff local where he works as an electrician.

Field debuted for South Sydney in 1990 and was promoted to captain in 1994.

He also played for Manly-Warringah, Balmain and Wests Tigers.

His career highlights include the 1997 grand final which Manly lost to the Newcastle Knights 22-16 when Darren Albert famously scored the match winning try.

just a few years ago he was charged for aiding in a break and enter into a leagues club in Wagga (or Gundagai) which lead to theft of a fair amount of money.

Think he got off due to a lack of evidence

Was wondering how long it would take for someone to do that...

I always wondered about that, that case just seemed to drop off the face of the earth.

The best one was when someone spiked his drink with a cocaine tablet

He had some talent, but as a human being though he's scum.

f*cking hell, what a dog. With our judicial system, he probably still won't see jail time though

I remember the CCTV footage of him smashing some bloke, at some pub or club.

He strikes me as a complete f**king headcase, a needs a lengthy spell behind bars.

In all seriousness I hope the guy he king-hit will be OK. Being on life support is never good.

Didn't he belt a bloke at star city one night.

All caught on CCTV,

Field is a stereotypical washed up bush footballer, dirty on the world for no reason
