I dont get home in time to watch the news anymore...though I would still love to hear what he had to say about the ABs early exit, to compare if it was as damning as what he would say about a warriors loss.

I would also be interested in watching the news should the Kiwis win well in the weekend...now NZ has lost Cricket, Americas Cup and the Rugby...I have feeling even though it's only a one-off the bandwagon would be jumped on, they'd be the brave heroes, Close up features will follow...and ****, it may even be higher up the sports section than Woodchopping and Chatham Island Softball league.
It is curious why League seems to be singled out to be pushed as far back down the Sport section as possible.

It's a conspiracy that dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, when the upper class white collar beauracrats felt threatened that the blue collar coal miners, wharvies, would earn more money through their unsportmanlike gesture of receiving payment for their exploits. It's evolved to include tertiary educated people who have absorbed jobs of significant pull when it comes to determine positioning in a level of importance.

Rugby league is in its best position right now to take the game forward thanks to the Warriors relatively sucessful year and profile, the AB's demise, unions gloss fading through it's rules, league marketing a great spectator sport thanks to the state of origin and nrl.

It's up to the kiwis now.

Hang on, we can't put the pressure on 20 odd guys. It's up to the NZRL!

Marketing, support, vision, strategic planning, ..... will do it.

Not nepotism, back patting, cronyism, self promotion or interests.

Could not agree with you more there...I'm astounded how rubbish the NZRL are at marketing themselves. This year they seem to have given themselves cool titles, high performance this, performance director extroidinare that...But read the line up and it's the same familiar, jobs-for-the-boys people there.
Bartercard failed, to a degree, through total lack of promotion. For ****s sake, I wanted to go along to the final Bulls game- Do you think I could find out ANYTHING about it?! No adverts for it, no price announcments...even going passed the RL ground in Chch I'd assumed it'd be at on the day gave no indication what was going on! Not even a sign or billboard on the fence! No wonder the comp flopped. You can't run a comp like that, how often do you see the NPC advertised, and drummed into you? And RL needs way more promoting than Union. The NZRL just seemed to think they could start the Bartercard up, then do nothing to push it, leave it on auto pilot. So it's not suprising what happened.

What about Promo DVDs? Even the Warriors DVD is an Aussie one! All the RL DVDs around are. I emailed the NZRL, and I know a few others did as well- Suggesting a Souvenior DVD of the 2005 Tri Series final should be released. No reply. I have the 2006 final on DVD, the official version- From Aussie again of Course. ALL my DVDs of NZ games and the '05 final are all bootlegs. The Rugby Union knows to cash in; the Cricket did with both Nathan Astles test double ton and Chappell Hadlee DVDs...where's the NZRLs thinking on this? They have a money spinner there, if they'd just think outside the square a little.

Thank God for the Mad Butcher, Bernie Wood, John Coffey & Richard Becht! Those guys have been great for providing RL books.

I still believe, if the NZRL management was cleaned out with all these mates, and some good managers and business heads were put in, RL in this country could really take off. And then the likes of TVNZ would have no choice but to cover it more, and cover it better!

Cheers Skinner, but as you say, it's just echoing thoughts from many fans for years. The NZRL is way too incestuous, and needs help from decent business models to drag it kicking and screaming into the current era. I am not convinced the current lot will do anything for the game. I respect the fact they're League fans and their intentions are good- But that won't be enough They seem more interested in self preservation. It's not rocket science- Just some decent marketing and a bit of effort. Get the balls out there guys! ;-)

Speaking of balls...Whatever happened to the time when all the kiwis walked onto the ground carrying a ball and kicking them into the crowd.

That was neat, sad it doesnt happen anymore.

I was watching the Aussie version of Sportscentre yesterday and they said that the Australians were apparantly feuding behind closed doors about the lack of promotions for this test by the NZRL.

Only 7000 pre sold tickets, the aussie team have had open training days and have been out in the public while the Kiwis trainings have been closed off to everyone and had basically no interaction with the public at all.

FFS its our centenary year and there has been NO f**kING PROMOTION at all. Good on the Aussies fronting the public with meet and greets but FFS NZRL wake up and get off your asses

Why do league people have no bloody idea on marketing in this country !!!!

You would never know it, i certainly didn't and read the sports pages every day, but there is a Trans Tasman Masters Tournament on at Hagley Park here in Chch this week. I stumbled upon it yesterday, and bloody Cliff Lyons is there playing !!!

Now, in the early 90s, there were a lot of people that supported Manly, and would love to see Cliff Lyons in action, why not market the fact he is here and get some people along to watch the guy and bring in the spectators to give it a lot more atmosphere. Who knows what other ex NRL players are running round in the teams too. I will hopefully be heading back after work sometime this week for a look and hopefully meet Lyons

Just as well in the end...! Lol, seriously though, it is utterly poor marketing, I'm not certain what it is most of them actually do most of the time. League has so much potential to be huge, taken to a completely different level. And it's almost like the NZRL wants to keep it as an exclusive little club. It's strange.

In a supreme single-handed attampt to make Craig Stannaway appear a genius, sports reporter Toni Street declared on Breakfast TV that "Steve Matai cost the Kiwis the game" on Sunday.
One small step for sports reporting; one giant leap for stupidity.
Where do TVNZ recruit their sports staff?
