Betting scam: Ayoub arrested

Leading rugby league player-manager Sam Ayoub has been arrested in connection with the police investigation into suspicious betting activity on a game last August.
Another man, 49, was arrested by police about 9.45am at a home in Punchbowl before being taken to Bankstown police station. Charges are expected to be laid.
Detectives are also executing a search warrant at a business premises on Hay Street in Leichhardt.
About 11am today, Ayoub, 49, was arrested by detectives from the Casino and Racing Investigation Unit after he went to Campsie police station. Charges are expected to be laid.
FORMER first grade footballer John Elias and player agent Sam Ayoub were today arrested as the NRL betting scandal deepened.
The arrests came as police laid a further three charges against Bulldogs player Ryan Tandy when he appeared in court today.
Elias, 48, of Punchbowl was arrested at 9.45am by police attached to a special taskforce set up to investigate the alleged betting scam.
Sam Ayoub, 49, Tandy's manager, was also arrested when he presented himself at Campise police station.
Ayoub's business offices in Leichhardt were also raided. Both men are expected to be charged later today and appear in court.

Then at a second hearing, on February 2, police say he gave false or misleading evidence about:
- Having a conversation discussing his position on the field at kick-off during a Bulldogs v Cowboys game in August last year.
- His betting activity and access to his TAB account.
- Having placed a bet on the Bulldogs v Titans game on June 18 last year.

Police have arrested NRL player manager Sam Ayoub and former first-grade player John Elias in relation to the alleged NRL betting scandal.
Detectives also executed a search warrant at business premises on Hay Street in Leichhardt, in Sydney's inner west.
Thursday's arrests relate to an NRL match between the Canterbury-Bankstown and the North Queensland Cowboys in August 2010.
Earlier on Thursday, Canterbury-Bankstown prop Ryan Tandy pleaded not guilty to a charge of providing false evidence about the alleged NRL betting scam.
NSW Police Force were expected to announce their findings at a press conference at Police Headquarters at 1 Charles Street, Parramatta from 1pm (EDT) on Thursday.
"Casino and Racing Investigation Unit detectives have today arrested two men and laid additional charges against another in court, following investigations into betting allegations," a police statement revealed.
"A 48-year-old man was arrested by police about 9.45am at a home in Punchbowl before being taken to Bankstown Police Station. Charges are expected to be laid.
"About 11am today, a 49-year-old man was arrested by police after he went to Campsie Police Station. Charges are expected to be laid."

So. . . . less then 24 hours after the season launch the biggest player manager of the NRL and a former player are arrested over a betting scandal involving match fixing with a player. . . .
This game seriously gets screwed every which way constantly.
Two men charged over alleged betting allegations – Casino and Racing Investigation Unit

Casino and Racing Investigation Unit detectives have today charged two men following investigations into betting allegations.
A 48-year-old man was arrested by police about 9.45am at a home in Punchbowl before being taken to Bankstown Police Station.
About 11am today, a 49-year-old man was arrested by police after he went to Campsie Police Station.
Both men were each charged with attempt to obtain financial ad advantage by deception and granted conditional bail to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on 7 April, 2011.
Detectives also executed a search warrant at a business premises on Hay Street in Leichhardt where they located and seized a computer, and other relevant documentation.
Today’s arrests follow investigations by police into an alleged illegal betting activity surrounding the Round 24 NRL match between the Bulldogs and the Cowboys.
Strike Force Suburb comprises detectives from the Firearms and Organised Crime Squad’s Casino and Racing Investigation Unit and was established to investigate the alleged incident. Investigations are continuing.
