IMO,I wouldn't be surprised if this is just the tip of the iceberg in what what might have been going on for years.

Alleged threats...John Elias. Picture: Anthony Reginato Source: The Daily Telegraph

RUGBY league identity John Elias spent last night in jail after allegedly sending threatening messages to TAB Sportsbet media manager Glenn Munsie.

In a dramatic twist to the NRL betting sting investigation, police yesterday charged Elias for allegedly sending messages to Munsie. It is unclear if the alleged messages came from Elias's phone.

He was refused bail and will appear at Bankstown Local Court today where he is expected to deny the latest charges.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal Munsie allegedly told police a message had labelled him "a maggot" and claimed he had "lived off people's misery all your life".

When contacted yesterday, a clearly agitated Munsie said: "Absolutely no comment ... absolutely no comment."

TAB Sportsbet managing director Craig Nugent also refused to elaborate on the allegations. "We will not be offering a comment on the matter, it is with the police," Nugent said. When asked if he could confirm that the alleged threats were made against Munsie, Nugent added: "No comment."

Police arrested Elias yesterday just after 2pm at Bankstown Police Station, where he was charged with breach of bail relating to contact made with a witness in the investigation.

Elias was refused bail and spent the night locked up but is scheduled to appear at Banks- town Local Court today.

A former rugby league first grader, Elias was also charged yesterday with two counts of "use carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence".

He was granted conditional bail to appear at the Downing Centre Local Court on April 7.

Yesterday's arrest continues the ongoing investigations by Strike Force Suburb detectives attached to the State Crime Commands Casino and Racing Investigation Unit.

The Strike Force was established last year to investigate alleged illegal betting activity surrounding the round 24 NRL match between the Bulldogs and the Cowboys.

On August 21 last year bookmakers suspended betting on the NRL match after the Cowboys were backed in from $13 to $7 to score first with the usually less fancied option of a penalty goal.

Bulldogs prop Ryan Tandy conceded a penalty in front of the posts just two minutes into the game, but the Cowboys took a tap kick and scored a try as their first scoring play - foiling the alleged betting sting. The NRL began an inquiry into the irregularities in the exotic betting market on the game with NSW Racing chief steward Ray Murrihy called in to question bookies.

The inquiry became a police investigation on August 31.

Tandy has denied any wrongdoing. He has since been sacked by the Canterbury club.

i was thinking people would come up with a conspiracy theory that they held off for a day to not ruin the launch

still can't believe people fell for that bogus email rumour about it supposedly going to happen right after the GF

The bigger conspiracy that I'm amazed nobody has "found" yet is that Todd Carney face court on April 6, while Benji Marshall, Sam Ayoub, John Elias and Ryan Tandy all face court on April 7.

I don't think it's a conspiracy at all personally, but some out there would probably see it as the NSW court system aiming to get maximum negative publicity for the NRL by scheduling all court cases for the same time. :sarcasm:

Former Bulldogs player Ryan Tandy has been charged with match-fixing over the NRL game against the Cowboys last year.
Tandy had been stood down from playing since being charged last month with four counts of lying to a NSW Crime Commission hearing into betting on the Cowboys to score first from a penalty goal in the round 25 match against the Bulldogs.
Tandy conceded a penalty in front of his posts in the opening minutes of the game.

How the hell can someone be charged with match fixing when they didn't fix a match? Sure, he was involved in a betting scam but it's not the same as match fixing.

Must be some pretty strong evidence to lay that charge on him. Be very interesting to see how Mr Brad Murray fits into this whole picture.

Interestingly is all I will say.
Here is hoping nothing in it.
I know Brad's father, he is a good bloke, and as a result I will not be making comment on the matter as that would be a betrayal of trust somewhat.

Police charge fourth man over NRL betting sting - Casino and Racing Investigation Unit
Wednesday, 03 August 2011 03:49:53 PM

Detectives have arrested and charged a fourth man as they continue their inquiries into alleged illegal betting activity on a National Rugby League match last year.

Strike Force Suburb was formed by State Crime Command’s Casino and Racing Investigation Unit investigators to examine allegations of illegal betting activity surrounding the Round 24 NRL match between the Bulldogs and Cowboys.

Three men – aged 29, 48 and 49 – have already been charged by the strike force and are currently before the courts.

As a result of further inquiries, a 38-year-old man attended Maroubra Police Station with his legal representative about 1pm today (Wednesday 3 August 2011).

He was taken into custody and questioned by investigators before being charged with attempt to dishonestly obtain financial advantage by deception (two counts).

The Maroubra man has been conditionally bailed to appear in Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday 25 August 2011.

Police will allege the man placed a number of bets on the first scoring option for that match. It will also be alleged he arranged for a woman in New Zealand to place bets on the same scoring option on his behalf.

Firearms and Organised Crime Squad Commander, Detective Superintendent Ken Finch, said the strike force is continuing its inquiries.

“The detectives working on the case do not intend to leave a stone unturned in their search for answers,” he said. “I would urge anyone with information that might assist the investigators to contact them via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”

League should take the AFL's hardline stance on this matter, they suspended a player for 5 or 6 games on full pay and will allow him to play in the finals.

Now that's what I call tough.
