ONE? He nearly cost us the game at the end, TWICE. First time he runs out for no reason, punches the ball about 3 feet in front of him right into a Croatian player. Fortunately we had about 3 guys back on the line (all of whom are better keepers than Kalac) and it was ok. Then afterwards, he collects the ball with 2 minutes left, instead of holding it for a little while charges out and launches a throw... right at the feet of the Croatian forward standing 15 feet outside of the box.
Not even mentioning the save he nearly threw back over the goal line, thankfully Schwarzer will be back against Italy.
No one doubts that Kalac had an out and out shocker. For all that though, Kalac cost Australia one goal and nearly a World Cup 2nd round appearance. He cant and wont play any worse. The first goal absolutely shattered his confidence. The pressure was too much, particularly with the late call up, his recent average form and the overinflated aussie opinion of Schwarzer.
Schwarzer, dont forget, also cost Australia one goal and nearly a world cup 2nd round appearance, in his first round match against Japan. That was just an average performance and he can get worse.
It is not a lay down missere. If Andrew Johns threw 4 intercept passes to lose the game for Newcastle this weekend, would you suddenly start a push for Brett Finch to be a better player because of his field goal in the origin a while ago. Guus has previously said he is dissappointed in the form of both goal keepers and he is 100% correct. On the surface, Schwarzer looks an obvious choice, but the choice is Guus'. He didnt make an easy decision dropping Schwarzer and wont make the easy decision of simply dropping Zjelko, just for the hell of it because of 1 shocker. Though i think that is the way he will eventually lean.
